JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of an Ocean Lifeguard, is responsible for the surveillance of the ocean and the prevention of emergency situations. The incumbent assists the public in case of emergency, renders first aid to injured patrons and exercises careful watch over recreational activities, facilities and equipment. Work is reviewed through observation and oral reports for adherence to established policies and beach rules. Work schedule includes weekends and holidays.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Required:
1. High School diploma or GED equivalent, plus one (1) year experience as an Ocean Lifeguard.
2. 500-meter run / 500-meter swim under 12 minutes required.

3. Must speak and understand the English language

Preferred:
EMT is preferred.

Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, write, hear, speak, and stand for long periods. Must be able to exert up to 50 lbs. of force as needed and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral, and depth perception. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work involves moderate to heavy physical activity in a primarily outdoor setting under all types of weather conditions with the added exposure to insects, animals and other hazards.
This position spends most of the time working in a physically threatening environment that requires me to make life and death decisions for the employee and others.

The Examination

You will be required to run 500 meters and swim 500 meters in 12 minutes or less and you must also speak and understand the English language.

This run/swim test will be given at the Lifeguard First Aid Station on Hollywood Beach at Madison Street. (954) 921-3423. Parking is available behind 1201 S. Ocean Drive in a City of Hollywood designated parking lot.

You will also be required to pass a background check and drug screen.

SUMMARY OF BENEFITS FOR PART-TIME EMPLOYEES

Regularly scheduled non-seasonal part-time employees who average at least thirty (30) hours or more of work per week shall be eligible for the following benefits:


All regular part time employees who average at least 30 hours per week shall accrue paid vacation following their employment anniversary date. Employees shall accrue vacation leave as follows:



After completion of the first full year of service, vacation time accrued as of September 30th of each year is to be utilized during the following 15 months. Cash payment in lieu of unused vacation shall be made only upon termination of employment or upon approval of the City Manager.

Not later than August 1st of each calendar year, an employee may elect to redeem up to a maximum of 40 hours of the unused annual (vacation) leave. Payment for such redemption to be made by or before September 10th following the redemption request.
