Position DescriptionProvides professional services related to diagnosis and treatment of inmate patients. Renders medical judgment regarding care provided to inmates assigned to the unit. Works under general direction of the Unit Medical Director, with wide latitude to exercise initiative and independent judgment. Directly supervises 2 to 4 Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners in the unit health services.
Major/Essential Functions- Examines inmate/patients to determine general health and prescribes treatment and administers medication as needed.
- Inspects, completes, and analyzes records, assigns, reviews and updates classification, completes clinic notes, clinic chart reviews, chronic care clinics, annual history & physical exams, and occasionally admission notes.
- Takes Unit call with other providers to provide 24 hour coverage.
- Reviews charts and monitors care provided by physician extenders on site.
- Refers patients to medical specialist or other practitioner for specialized treatment.
- Performs outside transfer call duty. This is typically 1 day per week during business hours. UM should obtain a bed for the potential transfer prior to the provider-to-provider call. Receives provider-to-provider sign out. Determines if the patient is appropriate to come to Montford and the level of care needed. Accepts patient in transfer if the patient is appropriate and there is a bed available. Consults w/ a Montford physician, if help is needed. Enters admission order set into EHR. Sends TTUHSC Outlook email to Montford provider group informing of the admission.
Required QualificationsCurrent license to practice medicine by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners. Current Drug Enforcement Agency and Texas Department of Public Safety controlled substances registration certificates.
