Salary:

Level I: up to $45,000.00, based on education and experience

Level II: up to $50,000.00, based on education and experience

Level III: up to $61,000.00 based on education and experience

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday

Primary Hours: 8-5

Position Description:

SoonerStart is Oklahoma’s early intervention program designed to meet the needs of families with infants and toddlers (ages birth to 3 years old) with developmental delays and/or disabilities in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The program builds upon and provides supports and resources to assist family members to enhance infants or toddler’s learning and development through everyday learning opportunities.

The Special Educator in the SoonerStart program is responsible for providing individual and family services to enhance the learning, development, and social-emotional skills of children with developmental delays as well as promote literacy and understanding of early cognitive concepts while monitoring progress toward goals. This includes assessing and/or screening health and development in young children; coaching and modeling skills for families to implement to enhance their child’s opportunities in health, cognitive, personal-social, language, and motor development; serving as a member of an interdisciplinary team to monitor the effectiveness of child health and development services.

This position is responsible for providing health, developmental and educational services in the areas of child health. Services are provided in the child’s natural environment settings in which children typically spend time, for example, home or childcare. Services include screenings, evaluations, intervention, and parent education.

Minimum Qualifications:

The Special Educator job family consists of four levels which are distinguished by the level of the complexity of specific job assignments, the extent of responsibility assigned for a specific task, and the level of expertise required for completion of assigned tasks.

Level I:

This is the basic level where incumbents perform beginning level professional work as a Special Educator and develop their technical skills in screening, evaluation, assessment, program planning, parent education and intervention while assisting in or performing various tasks.

Requirements at this level consist of a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or a related field from an accredited college or university and possession of a valid teaching certificate issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Education, certified in Special Education preferred but not mandatory. Plus, the ability to assess/evaluate children’s cognitive, social, emotional, communication, motor, and adaptive abilities to develop educational outcomes to enhance school readiness.

Level II:

This is the career level where incumbents perform all essential functions at the full Special Educator performance level practicing at a high degree of flexibility, and independently develop and implement programs to meet the child and family’s educational needs and goals.

Requirements at this level consist of a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or a related field from an accredited college or university and possession of a valid teaching certificate issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Education, certified in Special Education preferred but not mandatory, plus one year of post-baccalaureate teaching experience. Plus, the ability to assess/evaluate children’s cognitive, social, emotional, communication, motor, and adaptive abilities to develop educational outcomes to enhance school readiness.

Level III:

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of completion of a Master’s degree in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or a related field from an accredited college or university AND possession of a valid teaching certificate issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Education PLUS two years of teaching experience OR Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or a related field from an accredited college or university AND possession of a valid teaching certificate issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Education PLUS three years of teaching experience.

Level III Preferred Qualifications:

Special educationcertification is preferred.

Applicants must be willing and able to perform all job-related travel normally associated with this position and possess a valid driver’s license.

Level III:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of early childhood development theories and concepts; of developing and teaching the principles of early childhood and early childhood special education by using techniques, materials and curricula through evidence-based special education services; and of the typical and atypical development of children age birth through three. Ability is required to vary communication style to fit the situation; to understand, persuade and influence outcomes to ensure clients can achieve development goals; to analyze and identify solutions to a variety of childhood learning and development issues; to assess/evaluate children’s cognitive, social, emotional, communication, motor and adaptive abilities to develop educational outcomes to enhance school readiness; to establish and maintain effective working relations with others; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and to exercise initiative and independent judgment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Work is typically performed in the child’s natural environment (home or childcare setting) or in an office environment with climate-controlled settings and exposure to moderate noise levels. Telework and the provision of services remotely may also be required. While performing the duties of the job, employee is required to talk, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms and may lift up to 35 pounds. Being present in the office is an essential function of this job.

Travel Requirements

Applicants must be willing to perform all job-related travel associated with any of these positions. Occasional in-state overnight and weekend travel may be required.
