Job Summary: Performs the duties of a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Storm Water/Sweeping Division in the Public Works Department. Must work odd hours, weekends and overtime, particularly during snow season and when flooding occurs.
Will be required to be on call for after hour and weekend emergency duty approximately every 6 weeks. The salary range for this position is
$27.88- $39.04 per hour with a hiring range of
$27.88 - $33.46, depending on qualifications and experience.

Essential Functions: - Operates a full range of all light-to-heavy equipment utilized in the construction, repair and maintenance of roadway and drainage systems. This expectation includes an excavator, bulldozer, backhoe, front-end loader, tractor/mower, tractor-truck pulling heavy trailers, tandem-axle dump truck, tandem-axle with roll off, dump truck with snowplow and sander, liquid anti-icing/de-icing truck, street sweeper, flusher truck, large jet spray-vacuum truck, etc.
- Understands the basic grade-setting and grade-checking principles for installing pipe.
Other Job Functions: - In addition to operating specialized heavy equipment, will perform the duties of an equipment operator.
- Ensures that job site traffic control is in accordance with prescribed standards and follows established safety standards and precautions.
- Performs routine maintenance on assigned vehicles and construction equipment.
- Performs a thorough pre-trip and post-trip DOT inspection of assigned equipment and recognizes and reports abnormal operating functions of assigned equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Education: - High School graduate or GED required.
Experience: - 3 years experience in the road construction and/or drainage construction industries required.
- 2 years experience operating heavy equipment machines, tractor-truck with trailer, front-end loader, excavator, backhoe, street sweeper, jet spray/vacuum truck, and flusher truck required.
- Mechanical training/experience is highly desired.
Certifications: - Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with an air brake and tanker endorsement. Class A CDL with an air brake and tanker endorsement preferred.
- Must possess a Traffic Control Supervisor and flagging certificate, or obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Must possess considerable knowledge of road and drainage construction and general maintenance principles.
- Must possess considerable skill in the operation of the heavy/specialized equipment needed to construct, repair and maintain roads and drainage systems.
- Must possess considerable knowledge of snow and ice control techniques, materials, and equipment.
- Must work safely and follow all established safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Must follow oral instructions and communicate effectively with co-workers, lead workers and supervisors.
- Must have a basic knowledge of the city’s geography.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: - Frequent s trenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.
- Frequent e xposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.
- Occasional e xposure to marginal to moderate conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury.
