Description
The Job Project and Facilities Management is recruiting for a
Building Construction Inspector responsible for inspecting County facilities during construction and upon project completion to ensure work complies with approved plans, specifications, and applicable codes and regulations. The Building Construction Inspector works closely with the County’s Capital Improvement Project Managers to monitor construction activities and verify quality and compliance throughout all phases of vertical construction.
Projects involve a wide range of construction methods, materials, and building systems, requiring inspections of architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and specialized equipment installations. Duties include reading and interpreting complex construction drawings and specifications, performing field inspections, documenting findings, and confirming that construction work conforms to approved plans, contract requirements, and applicable building codes and standards.

The
Project & Facilities Management Department (PFMD) is a multi-disciplined department of professionals providing San Bernardino County with comprehensive building and facilities services. The department builds and maintains the majority of the County's vast infrastructure, which includes over 250 facilities. Several key departments served include Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, Fire District, Sheriff, Probation, Regional Parks, County Administrative Offices, Library, Museum, and many more!
The Project Management team is committed to delivering projects within the County’s annual Capital Improvement Program on time and within budget. The team also prioritizes high-quality improvements that create safe, functional environments for County departments and the communities they serve. Their work spans a diverse range of projects, from horizontal infrastructure to vertical construction.
The Project Management team are forward thinkers, seeking innovative solutions to improve processes, deliver quality services, and develop meaningful relationships with customers. Additionally, the team are hands-on, independent, and self-motivating, preparing bid packages and advertisements for procurement, negotiating and administering contracts for design and construction, and providing inspection and construction project management services from concept through occupancy.
In addition, the Facilities Management team comprises over 100 dedicated staff who oversee the operations, maintenance, landscaping, and custodial services for most County-owned facilities.

Travel: Travel throughout the County is required. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver's license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing the transportation.
Physical Requirements: May require frequent climbing, kneeling, crawling, lifting and carrying items weighing up to 25 pounds, and working on rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces.
Certification: Within six months of hire, employees must acquire and maintain certification with International Code Council (ICC) or equivalent recognized state, national, or international association (as determined by the County).
Continuing Education: Employees must complete a minimum of 45 hours of continuing education for every three-year period.
Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is unable to consider candidates who require Visa Sponsorship at this time or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment.
Minimum RequirementsCandidates must meet
one (1) of the following options to qualify:
Option 1: Two (2) years of recent journey-level experience (within the last five years) inspecting all phases of commercial building construction, utilizing and/or enforcing uniform building codes and contract specifications, for vertical construction projects.
Option 2: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience as a construction superintendent, assistant superintendent, or construction supervisor on commercial, institutional, or industrial building projects, overseeing multiple phases of vertical construction. Experience should include coordinating trades, reviewing construction plans and specifications, and ensuring compliance with applicable building codes, safety regulations, and project requirements.
A maximum of one (1) year of the required experience can be substituted using one of the following options: - Certification: A certification as an International Code Council (or equivalent) inspector.
- Coursework: Fifteen (15) semester (23 quarter) units of completed coursework in building construction inspection or trades, or a closely related field.
- Construction Experience: Three (3) years of full-time equivalent journey-level experience in commercial or industrial construction with experience in carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, or other construction-related craft.
Desired QualificationsThe
ideal candidate will possess ICC certification(s) and three (3) years of recent experience with a California public agency capital improvement team, working as an inspector for new and remodeled facilities. This ideal candidate will also be proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints to ensure conformance to applicable codes.
Possession of a
Residential Building Inspector Certification or
Commercial Building Inspector Certification issued by International Code Council (ICC) is highly desired.
