Position Duties

The Department of Transportation is currently seeking to fill multiple vacancies for the Engineer I/II position. This recruitment may be used to fill multiple positions in the future in other divisions or departments. The total salary range for the Engineer I/II classification is $50.06 to $71.85 hourly or $104,133.12 to $149,451.12 annually. This amount includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

Transportation Safety and Operations Division-Signal Design

The Engineer I/II positions in the Signals Design team provide traffic signal-related management and support services throughout the City of San José. The positions will work closely with other team members, and may include direct supervision of sub-professional technical staff.

Transportation Safety and Operations Division-Signal Operations

The Engineer I/II positions in the Signal Operations team are part of an innovative customer-oriented team responsible for managing day-to-day traffic conditions through the operations and management of the City's nearly 1000 traffic signals. The Engineer I/II will be responsible for assisting in project planning and engineering, construction coordination, and may include direct supervision of sub-professional technical staff.

Transportation Safety and Operations Division-Traffic Safety

The Engineer I/II positions in the Traffic Safety Division provides Neighborhood Traffic Management services and develops and implements Traffic Calming and Pedestrian Improvement Projects throughout the City of San José. The Engineer I/II will work closely with the team to develop traffic safety projects to improve safety for all roadway users, ensure facilities are pedestrian and bicycle friendly and comply with laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances. Services provided are heavily community oriented and can sometimes be politically sensitive. This position reports directly to an Associate Engineer and supervises Engineering Technicians and interns.

Engineers I/II will have opportunities to support the Traffic Safety Division staff in the following areas:

Transportation Planning and Project Delivery (PPD) Division - Local & Regional Project Delivery

The Engineer I/II positions in the Local and Regional Project Delivery section helps develop and implement the City's Transportation Capital Improvement Program in alignment with policies of the General Plan Envision 2040. Under the general direction of the Associate and/or Senior Engineer, this position will work with internal and external partners and the community to ensure the efficient delivery of transportation projects through the planning, environmental, design, and construction phases. Types of projects that the Engineer I/II may support include multi-modal enhancement to local roads, highway, expressway, and transit.

Transportation Planning and Project Delivery (PPD) Division - Development and Geometric Design

The Engineer I/II positions will, under general supervision or direction of the Associate Engineer, perform professional engineering work in street design; development of concept transportation infrastructure master plans, review plans for public and private projects in the City, and produce and review signage and pavement marking geometric plans. The successful candidate will need to understand basic engineering principles of transportation planning, traffic engineering, geometric/roadway design, and plan review. Surveying background or experience is desired, but not required.

Minimum Qualifications

Engineer I Engineer II
Acceptable Substitutions: Certificate of successful completion of the Engineer-In-Training examination issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists may be substituted for the required education.

Certifications/Licenses: Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license may be required. Possession of a Certificate of Registration in the required engineering discipline is desirable.
