The City of Olathe is hiring Heavy Duty Fleet Maintenance Technicians to help keep the trucks, equipment, and fleet assets that support essential City services safe, reliable, and ready for use.
In this role, you will perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy-duty vehicles and specialized equipment. Work may include mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, steering, suspension, air, and drivetrain systems. Depending on assignment, technicians may work on trucks, utility vehicles, loaders, backhoes, trailers, and other equipment used to support City operations.
This position may be filled at the I, II, III, or IV level based on a candidate’s related experience, training, certifications, and demonstrated ability to perform the work independently. Technician Levels and PayTechnician IPay Range: $21.75-$28.90 per hour
Minimum Qualifications: 0-2 years of related experience; high school diploma or GED required.
Technician IIPay Range: $23.75-$31.79 per hour
Minimum Qualifications: 2-4 years of related experience; high school diploma or GED required.
Technician IIIPay Range: $25.50-$34.97 per hour
Minimum Qualifications: 4-6 years of related experience in fleet, diesel, automotive, or heavy equipment maintenance; high school diploma or GED required.
Technician IVPay Range: $28.00-$39.06 per hour
Minimum Qualifications: 6+ years of progressively responsible related experience, including complex diagnostics and repair work; high school diploma or GED required.
Related technical school, trade school, manufacturer training, military mechanical experience, and industry certifications may be considered when evaluating qualifications and technician level placement. Licenses and CertificationsRequired at hire:- Valid driver’s license with favorable driving record
Required after hire:- Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within 6 months
- DOT medical certificate within the required timeframe
- Refrigerant recovery/recycling certification within the required timeframe, depending on assignment
- Additional assignment-specific certifications as required
Preferred:- ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications
- EVT certifications, where applicable
- Experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic and electrical systems
Work ScheduleMonday through Friday day shift. Typical hours are 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., depending on assignment.

Hiring BonusBonus payment structure:
- $1,000 after 30 days of active employment
- $1,000 after 6 months of active employment
- $2,000 after 1 year of continuous employment and after all required certifications identified in the offer letter have been obtained
Hiring bonus amounts are subject to budget availability, required approvals, and applicable City policy.
Candidates are not eligible for the hiring bonus if they are:
- Current City of Olathe employees transferring, promoting, demoting, or otherwise moving between City positions
- Temporary, seasonal, intern, or part-time employees, unless expressly approved
- Rehired former employees within 24 months of separation

For more details, review the full job details and requirements below.The Fleet Maintenance Technician uses their technical expertise to perform complex skilled maintenance, diagnostics and repairs to automotive, light, and medium duty trucks, and a wide variety of equipment such as but not limited to tractors and lawn mowers to ensure the vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently. This position is part of a four-level career progression of Fleet Maintenance Technician I, II, III and IV.
Key Responsibilities- Analyzes vehicle and equipment failures; determines causes, recommends and/or completes repair solutions including but not limited to engine, transmission, brake suspension, hydraulic and electric repairs using proper safety devices and procedures.
- Performs routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid checks to prevent breakdowns and extend the lifespan of vehicles and equipment.
- Performs equipment installation, fabrication, welding, and acetylene cutting for all types of vehicles and equipment.
- Responds to emergency repairs and service calls on vehicles and equipment including afterhours calls.
- Maintains accurate and detailed records; reports on repairs performed, equipment usage and condition.
QualificationsExperience:A minimum of three years of training and/or experience in Automotive and Equipment Maintenance and repair is required. Hydraulic experience preferred.
Education:A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented with course work in automotive technology is required. Trade school is preferred.
Licenses & Certifications:A valid driver’s license with favorable driving record is required. A class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required within 6 months of employment.
Environmental or Physical Demands: May encounter moderate noise levels from vehicles, equipment, instruments, or ventilation systems.
