The Position

The Mechanic/Senior Mechanic performs skilled preventive maintenance, inspection, diagnosis, repair, and overhaul of light and heavy-duty vehicles, construction equipment, and specialized equipment powered by gasoline, diesel, CNG, and electric systems.

• Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, tune-ups, and minor and major repairs.
• Service vehicles by changing oil, lubricating components, and replacing batteries, belts, filters, wiper blades, lights, tires, and other parts.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, braking, steering, suspension, drivetrain, and related systems.
• Inspect internal combustion engines and identify necessary repairs.
• Perform welding, metal cutting, soldering, and minor fabrication.
• Respond to emergency road calls and perform field repairs to minimize downtime.
• Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
• Keep the shop, tools, vehicles, and equipment clean, safe, and orderly.

The Senior Mechanic, in addition to the duties of a Mechanic, will perform advanced mechanical work and provide technical guidance, direction, and training to less-skilled personnel. This position oversees major and minor repairs and installations and helps ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the City's fleet.

• Diagnose, repair, and overhaul complex vehicle and equipment systems.
• Perform major engine repairs and overhauls, component replacement, brake relines, and specialized repairs.
• Work on gasoline, diesel, CNG, and electric vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnose and repair electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, drivetrain, steering, suspension, braking, ignition, emissions, air conditioning, and computer-controlled systems.
• Repair hydraulic pumps and controls, air compression systems, and air/hydraulic brake systems.
• Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and prepare newly acquired equipment for service.
• Perform emergency field repairs and help maintain fleet operational readiness.
• Prepare vehicles and equipment for auction.

The Mechanic/Senior Mechanic position is full-time, 4 days per week, 38-hour workweek, between Monday and Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Hours of work may vary, and some evening and holiday hours may be required. Work schedule depends on crew assignment and will be determined upon hire.

Ideal Candidate

Experience: 3 years of semi-skilled experience in automotive repair work.

Education: Completion of high school or equivalent is required.
Licenses:

• Class C driver's license with a good driving record. The successful candidate must attain, within twelve months of employment, a valid Class B California driver's license and keep it in good standing.
• Must successfully complete at least one ASE automotive truck certification upon completion of probation (City reimburses employee's costs associated with these certifications).

Highly Desirable:

• Experience and certification in alternative fuel systems and heavy equipment is highly desirable.
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification
• Supplemental specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas- and diesel-powered equipment is highly desirable.

In addition to Mechanic requirements, the Senior Mechanic will:

Experience: 4 years of increasingly responsible journey-level experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and heavy-duty equipment and their related systems.

Licenses:

• Class B driver's license with a good driving record. The successful candidate must attain, within twelve months of employment, a valid Class A California driver's license and keep it in good standing.
• Successful completion of one or more ASE medium/heavy-duty truck certifications is required upon completion of probation (City reimburses employee's costs associated with these certifications).

Highly Desirable:

• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification
• Experience and certification in alternative fuel systems, compression, and dispensing is highly desirable
• Be responsible for complex repairs and maintenance of vehicles, heavy-duty equipment, and related systems. Perform work requiring a higher level of technical knowledge, diagnostic ability, and independent judgment.

THE COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT

The Community Services Department is responsible for managing and coordinating the work effort of three operating divisions: Maintenance, Solid Waste, and Motor Fleet. To deliver the high-quality services necessary to fulfill the needs of the City Council and the citizens, the department has an annual operating budget of $17.2 million and 38 full-time employees across all divisions.

The Solid Waste Division is tasked with providing residential and commercial sanitation services, including trash, organic, and recycling collection. The Maintenance Division oversees all sewer, street, and sidewalk maintenance; public facilities maintenance; and maintenance of the City’s parks and urban forest. Lastly, the Motor Fleet Division is responsible for maintaining the City's fleet and fueling stations.

Community Services has an annual work plan that includes implementing applicable sustainability actions listed in the Sustainable City, and increasing sustainability efforts throughout City facilities and programs. Among other plans, Community Services is responsible for maintaining the landscape and facilities surrounding the iconic Claremont Village.
