Description
The City of Burlingame is accepting applications for the position of part-time Park and Field MonitorThe Park and Field Monitor is a casual, part-time position working approximately 15-20 hours per week with the Recreation Division. Field Monitors support the safe and appropriate use of City athletic fields, parks, and open spaces by monitoring facilities, communicating with users, and assisting with the enforcement of City rules and policies.
The ideal candidate will be customer-service oriented, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently and interacting with a variety of community members and City staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES Typical duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in the supervision and enforcement of rules, ordinances, and policies at City athletic fields, parks, and open spaces.
- Interact in a positive and friendly manner with City staff, community members, organizations, and businesses.
- Report interactions and facility conditions to Recreation staff.
- Inspect public areas for safety hazards and sanitary conditions and report possible hazards to Recreation staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES & SKILLS Knowledge of: Burlingame Parks and Recreation Department regulations and City policies; geography of the City and locations of City parks and facilities; and the organization, supervision, scheduling, or participation in youth and adult sports.
Ability to: Work independently without direct supervision; interpret and enforce field use policies, park rules, and ordinances; follow verbal and written instructions; serve as an effective liaison with youth and adult users of athletic fields; provide positive customer service when interacting with the public; work cooperatively and effectively with co-workers; provide general assistance to the public; and work weekends and holidays as required.
Skills: Building positive working relationships through effective communication of rules and regulations with users of athletic fields, parks, playgrounds, and open spaces.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and/or Experience: Equivalent to completion of high school. Sufficient education and experience to successfully perform the duties of the position.
License/Certificate: Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND ENVIRONMENT WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven, and slippery surfaces; reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires near and far vision and the ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 55 pounds or more.
The incumbent works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold conditions, and must be able to drive motorized vehicles, hear well enough to follow directions, and see well enough to read instructions.
The incumbent may be required to respond to after-hours emergency call-outs and perform routine standby duties.

Accrued sick leave may be used after 90 days of employment. Employees may use up to 40 hours of paid sick leave during a one-year period. Unused sick leave has no cash value.
Vacation: Part-time casual employees who work 30 or more days within one year of their hire date accrue vacation at the rate of one (1) hour for every 52 hours worked, up to a maximum of 16 hours per year. Employees may not accrue more than two years' worth of vacation at any one time.
Additional Information: No other benefits are provided. This is an at-will, casual position and is not part of the City's Civil Service System. Work hours are based on operational needs, there is no guarantee of hours, and employment may end at any time.
