The Job

The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health is recruiting for Health Information Coder Trainees. Health Information Coder Trainees, under training conditions, abstract and code medical records according to the International Classification of Diseases and Current Procedural Terminology. Duties include reviewing charts (in paper or electronic format) and identifying procedures; abstracting and coding (or providing guidance on) patient charts, utilizing ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding classifications; evaluating charts for completeness and accuracy in conformance with current-relevant standards and regulations; and contacting clinic/hospital staff to complete charts, make corrections, and/or clarify information for coding purposes.

The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill vacancies within the Department of Public Health, Department of Behavioral Health and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center as they occur.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.

Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require Visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment.

Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation (mileage reimbursement is available at current IRS rates). A valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing the transportation.

Experience utilizing an automated encoder or abstracting system is highly desired.
