DEFINITION:
Drives a County vehicle to transport ambulatory patients/clients to and from residences, County, and non-County facilities such as hospitals, clinics, and rehabilitative agencies.

Essential Job Functions

Drives a van, station wagon, or automobile to transport ambulatory patients or clients to and from residences and County or non-County health or mental health care facilities or other location.
Contacts facilities to confirm patient/client availability and ambulatory status (need for wheelchair availability or accessibility).

Assists patients/clients into and out of the vehicle, facility, or their homes by holding on to them to ensure they are not injured when entering or leaving the vehicle; may use an automated lift.

Attends to patients' or clients' safety and comfort en route by driving carefully and in accordance with State and local traffic laws and ordinances and County policies and procedures.

Observesthe seriousness of a patient's condition and administers emergency first aid and/or basic life support measures based on the patient's physical condition. If necessary, contacts appropriate emergency personnel.Observes patient's response and decides whether or not to complete an assigned trip or transport the patient directly to the nearest hospital providing emergency care.

Delivers emergency medications, medical records,specimens, medical supplies, and blood when required to patients at home or in health care facilities.

Checks patient's identification and obtains signature of patient or authorized person for receipt of medication.

Prepares reports of mileage traveled, gasoline used, number of patients transported, and any unusual incidents.

Refuels, cleans, and checksvehicle for required servicing and repairs.

Sends vehicle to the Internal Services Department for required servicing and repairs.

Give testimony in Mental Health Court regarding a client's refusal or inability to attend a hearing as needed.

Pick up and deliver client's personal property from one location to another as needed.

Transport County employeesand non-ambulatory patients/clients from one location to another as needed.

Transport persons accompanying patients/clients, as appropriate as needed

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Option I: Six (6) months of experience in the care of patients in a hospital or institution.

Option II: Six (6) months of experience in the transportation of patients to and from a hospital or institution.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION:

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License.

A California Class B Driver License or current CPR and First Aid Certificates may be required.

LICENSE INFORMATION:
Successful applicants for this position must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. LICENSE MUST NOT BE CURRENTLY SUSPENDED, RESTRICTED, or REVOKED.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
PHYSICAL CLASS III: MODERATE
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

Additional Information

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an evaluation of your ex perience and desirable qualifications based on your application information weighted 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be added to the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:
Appointees may be required to work any shift , including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
