The County of Yuba is actively recruiting to fill current vacancies and establish an employment list for the position of Public Safety Dispatcher within the Sheriff’s Department. The incumbent receives 9-1-1 system sheriff, fire, medical emergency and rescue calls; dispatches sheriff, fire and medical personnel following established procedures; maintains communication with officers in the field to ensure safety and provide back-up and information; provides relief coverage for the records unit; and performs related work as assigned. These classifications require shift work and the ability to make decisions and act appropriately in stressful situations. The work also involves interdepartmental cooperation with various public safety agencies located throughout the County to coordinate the most effective response to requests for assistance from the public.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate must maintain flexibility for shiftwork and mandated overtime as compulsory to the departments needs. The incumbent must be self motivated, accountable and possess the ability to learn and adapt in a fast pace, multi-tasking environment.

Qualifications:

Minimum: Equivalent to graduation from high school, one (1) year of office support or customer contact experience. Valid typing certificate with a minimum of 35 net words per minute.

Preferred: In addition to the minimum, 30 semester units from an accredited college or university with major course work in administrative justice, criminal justice, business administration or a field related to the work and experience working as a dispatcher for a law enforcement agency; type up to 50 nwpm; and/or possess a valid current P.O.S.T. certified 120-hour Basic Complaint/Dispatcher course certificate.

Lateral: In addition to the Public Safety Dispatcher minimum, possess a P.O.S.T. Certified 120-hour Basic Dispatcher Course and at least one year of current, full-time, paid public safety dispatcher experience with a recognized law enforcement agency, which included successful completion of a Dispatcher Training Program and a probationary period. *Lateral Hiring Incentives Eligibility: Must be currently employed with a another recognized law enforcement agency.

Working Conditions : Work evenings, nights, weekends, holiday extended hours, and rotating shifts. Work in situations which involve emergencies and may be a stressful; radio dispatch setting; fast paced and multi-tasking environment. During extreme emergency events or a shutdown of the Communications Center incumbents may be required to work from a Mobile Command Post Vehicle.

Public Safety Dispatcher Hiring Range: $4,886 - $5,375 /Monthly

Public Safety Dispatcher Lateral Hiring Range: $5,375 - $6,352 /Monthly

SOCIAL SECURITY: Yuba County does not participate in the Social Security Program.

MEDICARE: Yuba County does participate in the Medicare Program.

STATE DISABILITY INSURANCE: SDIprovides benefits to employees who are unable to work due to non-work-related illness or injury. Paid Family Leave (PFL) automatically covers persons covered by SDI.

DENTAL/VISION INSURANCE: The County pays 100% of the Basic plan premiums for employee or 80% for employee and eligible dependent(s). Requires participation in Health Insurance benefits.

LIFE INSURANCE: County provides $50,000 in life insurance coverage. Employees may purchase supplemental life insurance for themselves & dependents.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: County paid confidential counseling program for up to 5 sessions per incident per policy year.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION: One Voluntary Deferred Compensation plan is available.

EMPLOYER CONTRIBUTION TO DEFERRED COMPENSATION 401(A) PLAN: The County will provide a deferred compensation plan match after the completion of 2 years of service.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE:

ONE-WAY VIDEO INTERVIEW:

One-way interviews may be used as an extension of the application process as a secondary method of screening large applicant pools or as an oral examination. A panel may be comprised of one individual, typically the hiring authority, or a small group of subject matter experts. Oral examinations can be used to assist in the establishment of an employment list or as part of the hiring decision. The goal of a on-way interview is to simulate an actual in-person interview environment. If one-way video interviewing is utilized in the recruitment process, applicants are provided detailed information including instructions, interview practice options and 24 hour direct support from the County's vendor, Spark Hire.

PERSONAL HISTORY STATEMENT:

All applicants that successfully complete the examination process and are certified to the employment list, will be notified. Upon request all applicants certified to the employment list MUST submit a completed Miscellaneous Personal History Statement (PHS) directly to the Sheriff's Department. A review of the PHS will be conducted for each candidate to determine which candidates best meet the professional standard criteria adopted by the Department.

TESTING ACCOMMODATION:

ON-LINE EXAM:

Applicants who meet the position qualifications must successfully complete a CritiCall Dispatcher Proficiency Exam. This is an on-line assessment tool that simulates a dispatch call center. Sample calls and instructions are provided to the applicant, which are used to evaluate the required dimensions needed for successful job performance. ( Note: Applicants with a valid P.O.S.T Battery Entry Level T-Score of 48 of higher from an exam proctored with any P,O,S,T, agency within the last 12 months, may waive participation (Important: proof and validation of a P.O.S.T. T-Score is required prior to the County's testing date).

EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY LIST:

An employment eligibility list is established for those applicants who successfully pass all phases of the examination process. This list will be held for a minimum of six (6) months from the date the list is certified. For each vacancy the top five (5) ranks on the list will be certified to the department for final selection, which will include a departmental interview.

DEPARTMENTAL INTERVIEW:

The Sheriff's Department will notify the applicant of the date and time of his/her interview. The applicant will be asked a series of questions about his/herself and his/her related experience, education and training that exhibit the knowledge, skills and abilities essential to the job. The applicant may also be asked questions about hypothetical situations to test his/her ability to make decisions and use sound judgment and common sense.
