Deaf Community Advocate - Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Description
Job Location: This position will be located at 3216-3218 Emerald Lane, Jefferson St., Jefferson City, MO 65101.
Why you’ll love this position: The Deaf Community Advocate position is responsible for training, awareness, and advocacy across the state for both private and public agencies. Training will cover issues included but not limited to ADA law and suggestions, Communication access, ASL and Sign Language, Deaf Culture, and Hearing Loss and Aids. The position will also provide direct and coordinated advocacy on an as needed basis to individuals seeking assistance in self-advocacy and support when accessing or utilizing programs and services in their communities throughout the state of Missouri.
- Maintains current knowledge and topics related to hearing loss, deafness, Deaf culture, American Sign Language, services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and issues relating to hearing loss.
- Maintains current knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to hearing loss.
- Provides and coordinates presentations, public awareness activities, workshops and training sessions pertaining to topics related to job description.
- Effectively communicates using both written English and American Sign Language, with groups and individuals who are hearing, hard of hearing, or deaf.
- Effectively establishes and maintains working relationships with members of the general public, organizations, and state agencies.
- Assists in the development of educational and advocacy materials or tools such as: information packets, advocacy letters, communication cards, brochures for programs and services, etc.
- Advises and supports deaf and hard of hearing individuals regarding their rights and accessing programs, serves, and opportunities in the state of Missouri via in-person and virtual meetings.
- Performs, assists, and coordinates outreach activities that align with MCDHH programs.
- Assists in maintaining agency webpage.
- Assists in maintaining social media platforms.
- Prepares and submits contact and phone logs, and related reports.
- Contribute and assist with Commission report presentation.
- Represent the Commission at meetings and functions when necessary.
- Performs job-related travels within the State of Missouri.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
- Demonstrate regular, reliable, and engaged attendance.
Minimum Qualifications: - A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Pre-law, Advocacy, Social Work, or a closely related field and one year of successful experience in a professional capacity.
OR - Five or more years’ successful relevant work experience in the legal field, advocacy, social work, and/or other progressively closely related experience, and possession of a high school diploma or equivalency.
