Fire Suppression Aide I, who, under direction, perform a variety of tasks requiring arduous manual labor in the prevention, suppression, and control of vegetation fires, and provide support at fire suppression emergencies. To learn more about

These positions are extra-help positions which are seasonal or temporary in nature and do not attain regular status. This is an entry-level position that may lead to
a career as a firefighter with SBCFD. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Background: A successful background check is required prior to assignment.
Physical Ability: Fire Suppression Aides are responsible for performing hazardous tasks under emergency conditions. The work in this class demands heavy physical labor for periods of varying duration under hazardous conditions and in all weather conditions. This includes, but is not limited to, hiking trails, working in steep, uneven terrain, working in confined areas, and working in smoke-filled limited visibility environments. This position requires the strength and physical abilities necessary to perform the duties of a fire fighter. Training includes successful completion of the San Bernardino County Fire Department's physical fitness assessment, encompassing a run, pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups, and hiking with a pack; successful completion of training includes completing these activities within specified time limits. (Fitness activities are similar to the SIHCO and US Forest Service requirements.) Persons seeking appointment to this class must meet the safety health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties established by the San Bernardino County Fire Department.
Positions: These are
extra-help, Unclassified positions and shall be considered at-will for approximately 9 months per year. Positions are typically scheduled for 40 hours per week, with scheduled overtime hours, as well. Some positions may work year-round depending on workload. Applicants must be willing to work anywhere within San Bernardino County. Employees must adhere to the provisions of the County Fire and Special Districts Dress Code, which prohibits all visible tattoos.

Minimum RequirementsCandidates must meet the following qualifications at time of application:
- At least 18 years of age
- Possess High School Diploma or equivalent
- Possess and maintain valid California Class C driver license
Candidates will be required to demonstrate physical ability to carry out the arduous nature of this position within time constraints.
Desired QualificationsCandidates possessing additional related certifications are highly desired, especially the following:
- I-100 or I-200 (ICS100 or ICS200) - Intro/Basic Incident Command
- S-130 - Firefighter Training
- S-190 - Intro to Wildland Fire Behavior
Be sure to submit a copy of all your certifications, or a copy of the CA Incident Command Certification System Qualification Card (CICCS Red Card).
Selection Process Physical Agility Test: Selected qualified candidates will be invited to demonstrate physical ability and participate in an interview.
The tentative dates for the PAT and selection interviews are: - PAT: December 3-4, 2024
- Selection Interviews: December 11 & 12, 2024
The Physical Agility will consist of:- 1.5 mile run in under 10 minutes and 35 seconds
- Max push-ups in 1 min. (minimum of 25)
- Max sit-ups in 1 min. (minimum of 40)
- Max pull-ups in 1 min. (minimum is based on weight)
- Greater than 170lbs = 4 pull-ups
- 135-169lbs = 5 pull-ups
- 110-134lbs = 6 pull-ups
- Less than 109lbs = 7 pull-ups
