THE POSITION
This recruitment is being conducted to fill two full-time vacancies. The current open positions are in Patrol Operations. The list established by this recruitment may be used to fill future full-time, part-time, limited term, and temporary vacancies for up to one year.
The incumbent in this position will be expected to participate in performing a wide variety of civilian field and office law enforcement work in direct support of sworn personnel and may be assigned to traffic, patrol, evidence and property, or investigations.

When assigned to the Traffic Division, incumbents will be responsible for receiving and processing abandoned vehicle notices, maintaining control status of reported vehicles, coordinating the removal of vehicles, and providing notification to registered owners. They will monitor and enforce City ordinances of non-criminal nature. They will investigate auto accidents of non-criminal nature, documenting the accident scene, taking statements from those involved, and maintaining the appropriate paperwork. They will also be expected to respond to complaints from the public and investigate potential violations and alleged nuisances.

When assigned to Patrol Operations, incumbents will respond to non-violent, cold criminal cases, and traffic collisions. They will perform a wide variety of civilian field work in direct support of sworn personnel including taking police reports, conducting traffic investigations, and crime scene search/processing. They will also respond to public inquiries, provide the public with information, and resolve complaints in a courteous, efficient, and timely manner.

When assigned to the Evidence and Property Division, incumbents will assist in the processing of crime scenes including photographing, conducting latent fingerprint searches, collecting evidence, writing reports, and preparing sketches. They will assist in preparing evidence for use which includes bar coding evidence and entering descriptions of evidence into the system. They will retrieve evidence from court, return it to evidence storage and enter the transactions into the system. They will also dispose of evidence in accordance with court orders or laws, under the supervision of sworn personnel.

When assigned to the Investigations Division, incumbents will perform a variety of routine follow-up investigative work not requiring sworn personnel. They will assist in conducting interviews, taking statements, and gathering evidence. They will also be expected to conduct routine statistical analyses related to criminal activities and will make court appearances as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience :
Two years of experience involving exposure to the public and interpretation of laws, rules, and procedures. Some experience in a criminal justice agency performing non-sworn duties is desirable.

Training : A high school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by specialized law enforcement training.

License or Certificate :
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Knowledge of :

Working Conditions
Office and patrol environment; exposure to dust and noise; bodily fluids, and noise; some climbing, stooping, light lifting and investigation in confined areas.

The Recruitment & Selection Process

3) Candidates who are deemed to be the best qualified will be invited to take part in an assessment process which may consist of written, online, oral, or performance exercises. Candidates invited to the assessment process will be notified by email of the date, time, and location of the assessment.

The City reserves the right to limit the number of candidates to those determined to be best qualified based upon all requested application materials, including training and experience, current resume, and responses to supplemental questions.

4) Candidates placed on the Register of Eligibles (eligible list) will be referred to the department for final interviews based on their performance in the exam. The number of candidates referred for a hiring interview is at the discretion of the hiring department.
