A New Opportunity and what you’ll do...ThePolice Services Officers/Senior Police Services Officers are non-sworn ("civilian") positions responsible for a variety of duties related to the enforcement of law and order. Duties may include taking/preparing non-hazardous crime reports, providing information to the public, administrative support, and coordinating program activities and technical tasks. These duties may be related to crime prevention, civilian volunteers, station desk officer, offender registration, property and evidence processing, background investigations, traffic unit, parking enforcement, court liaison and digital evidence coordination, animal control, or other.
The ideal candidate for this position:
- Responds diplomatically and tactfully to people of diverse backgrounds, often in adverse situations
- Diffuses situations that involve persons who are confrontational, irate, confused, or frustrated
- Is skilled at planning, coordinating, and directing special events or activities
- Is familiar with crime prevention and volunteer programs
- Has excellent computer and report-writing skills, and experience interpreting complex policies and procedures
- Has experience as support for law enforcement
- Works independently, with minimum supervision
Two positions:- Police Services Officer (PSO): This is the entry-level class in the flexibly allocated series. This position is distinguished from the Senior PSO by the performance of more routine tasks and duties assigned. Typically used as a training class where incumbents follow established procedures and guidelines, the PSO works under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.
- Senior Police Services Officer (Sr. PSO): This is the journey level job classification in the flexibly allocated series. This position is distinguished from the PSO by the assignment of the full range of duties and higher level of responsibility and more complex nature of the duties assigned. Sr. PSOs are required to be fully trained in all procedures and perform the most complex police services, acting as back-up to other areas. Under direction, they exercise technical and functional supervision over assigned police services officers and/or cadets, volunteer personnel and parking enforcement personnel.
Experience and Qualifications for Success!A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and some experience working with the public. Although not required, experience in a law enforcement support position is desirable.
In addition, a Senior Police Services Officer requires a combination of education, training and experience equivalent to three years of increasingly responsible experience in a law enforcement support position equivalent to that of a Police Services Officer at the City of Ventura which includes at least one year of experience in one of the following areas at the City of Ventura: Traffic, Property Room, Front Desk, Storefronts/Volunteers, Crime Prevention, Court Officer, Offender Registration and Digital Evidence. Prior functional and/or lead experience highly desirable.
License:Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required.
