SUMMER DAY CAMP COUNSELOR I/IIBACKYARD EXPLORERS AND EAST BAY EXPLORERS (SEASONAL)The City of Concord is seeking individuals to work for the City's Summer Day Camp Programs in the Recreation Services Department. Salary is negotiable based on experience:
- Backyard Explorers Counselor I: $16.80 - $17.65/hour, with no experience
- East Bay Explorers Counselor II: $17.65 - $18.54/hour, with some experience
- Lead Counselor: $18.09 - $19.48/hour, with some experience
The Day Camp Programs:Concord Recreation Services is a diverse, high performing, collaborative team that creates community through people, parks, and programs. Our fun, welcoming, and inclusive programs improve the quality of life of our participants and community. Participants and staff can experience the camp of a lifetime with Backyard Explorers and East Bay Explorers. These programs provide a safe and supervised place for children and teens to make new friends, engage in a variety of daily camp activities, and explore a new Bay Area location each week on a field trip.
The Backyard Explorers Day Camp is for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. It is located at Markham Nature Park at 3915 Cowell Road in Concord, CA.
- Staff training is offered at various dates and times between June 2 - June 8, 2025
- Camp runs from June 9 - August 1, 2025
- Camp clean up runs from August 4 - August 8, 2025 for select positions
- Work hours may vary between 6:30AM - 6:30PM
The East Bay Explorers Day Camp is for youth 11 to 14 years old. It is located at Willow Pass Community Center at 2748 East Olivera Road in Concord, CA.
- Staff training is offered at various dates and times between June 2 - June 8, 2025
- Camp runs from June 9 - August 1, 2025
- Camp clean up runs from August 4 - August 8. 2025 for select positions
- Work hours may vary between 8:00AM - 6:00PM

What you will be doing: Under supervision, Camp Counselors assist with a variety of recreation program activities, including customer service at centers, monitoring participants, and assisting with the supervision of individual and team sports, programs, and activities. Activities may include local excursions, swimming, barbecues, arts and crafts, cooking projects, and contests, as deemed suitable for the age of the participants.
The Counselor II is distinguished from the Counselor I in that the Counselor II performs duties independently.
The Lead Counselor is distinguished from the Counselor II in that the Lead Counselor performs additional checking in and checking out duties at the beginning and end of each day.
All positions are part time, limited service, and m ust be able to work approximately 20-35 hours a week; early morning, evening and weekend shifts when required; and attend weekly in-service trainings. Hours may vary based on assigned camp and weekly activities.

Examples of duties include, but are not limited to- Plan, implement, and participate in recreational programs and activities in the areas of crafts, nature, group games and sports
- Monitor and provide for the safety of children and youth
- Establish positive relationships with youth, parents and coworkers
- Implement and engage in recreational programs for youth
- Demonstrate a sound knowledge of good work ethics and youth development
- Gather and organize supplies for scheduled activities
- Assist with organizing recreation activities, and learn to maintain discipline at recreation facilities
- Assist in the enforcement of rules, regulations, and safety precautions for municipal facilities
- Maintain recreation facilities and equipment in clean and safe condition, and in compliance with City policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Provide First Aid services when needed
- Attend weekly staff meetings
- Other duties as assigned
In addition to the above, Lead Counselors also perform the following:
- Assist with routine attendance and participation records; check out and check in personal belongings such as clothing at the pool, recreation and athletic equipment, games and toys, etc.
QualificationsKnowledge of: - Operations of public recreation programs.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- How to play games, sports, arts & crafts and other recreational activities.
- Basic record keeping principles and procedures.
Ability to:- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Account for money and making change
- Interpret and explain City policies and procedures.
- Monitoring operations and notifying supervisor of safety and discipline issues.
- Dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with employees and the general public.
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
COUNSELOR IEducation: Some high school or equivalent is required.
Experience: Customer service experience and/or experience working with children is highly desirable.
Certifications: None required. Must successfully complete American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR/AED training at time of hire if not already certified.
COUNSELOR IIEducation: High school diploma or equivalent is desirable.
Experience: Some experience working with children or youth of various ages is required. Experience may include work as a camp counselor, babysitter, tutor, church or youth group volunteer, or similar type position.
Certifications: None required. Must successfully complete American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR/AED training at time of hire if not already certified.
LEAD COUNSELOREducation: High school diploma or equivalent is desirable.
Experience: One year experience working with children or youth of various ages is required. Experience may include work as a camp counselor, babysitter, tutor, church or youth group volunteer, or similar type position.
Certifications: None required. Must successfully complete American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR/AED training at time of hire if not already certified.
OtherA valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment for select positions. Must successfully clear TB testing and fingerprint check.
