The Department of Conservation and Development (DCD) is headed by the Director of DCD, and within DCD there are five (5) divisions under a Deputy Director or Assistant Deputy Director: 1) Current Planning; 2) Policy Planning; 3) Building Inspection Services; 4) Business and Information Services; and 5) Housing and Community Improvement. DCD's main office is located in Maritnez. DCD has a total staff of approximately 170 positions serving the entire County of Contra Costa.

The department of Conservation and Development (DCD) is seeking to fill one (1) vacancy in the classification of Grading Inspector I.

Under supervision, Grading Inspectors will advise customers on permitted uses of materials, installation methods, and code requirements; and will conduct field inspections of construction projects focusing on grading, drainage, erosion control, drainage structures, and building foundations. The position will be assigned to DCD's Building Inspection services Division.

This division is a vital part of DCD’s efforts to maintain high standards for residential and commercial development throughout Contra Costa County.

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a valid California Class C Motor Vehicle Operator's license. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process.

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or a high school proficiency certificate.

Experience: Three (3) years of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience in grading and/or excavation that would provide knowledge of the basic principles of soil mechanics and geology as applied to grading.

Selection Process

Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process. Oral Board Assessment: An online, Oral Board assessment will be administered to all accepted candidates. This Assessment will measure competencies, including but not limited to: Oral Communication, Handling Stress, Professional Integrity & Ethics, and Customer Focus. DISASTER SERVICE WORKER

All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
