San Bernardino County is recruiting for Laboratory Assistants who set up and assist with routine laboratory tests for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease, as well as provide essential data to drive decisions in environmental health. Duties include receiving and labeling clinical specimens such as stool, blood, urine, and sputum in a laboratory; data entry in the laboratory information system; preparing and processing specimens for tests and analysis according to standardized procedures; preparing culture media, chemical reagents and sterile solutions; and staining and preparing slides for examinations.

Positions in this classification are assigned to the Department of Public Health (DPH) and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC). The list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future full-time, part-time, and extra-help vacancies as they occur in these departments.

Department of Public Health Lab : The San Bernardino County Public Health Laboratory is a California State Department of Public Health certified laboratory as well as a CLIA federally certified laboratory. Providing a broad range of reference and diagnostic services in the fields of bacteriology, virology, immunology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and food bacteriology. We identify and prevent the spread of infectious diseases by providing quality and timely laboratory services.

Arrowhead Regional Medical Center Lab: The full-service Arrowhead Regional Medical Center Pathology and Clinical Laboratory is accredited by the State of California, College of American Pathologists, and the by The Joint Commission (TJC). Services include the disciplines of blood bank, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, microbiology, serology and urinalysis. State-of-the art instrumentation in hematology and chemistry help the lab conduct nearly four million tests each year.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

ARMC Shift Availability: Positions in ARMC require working various shifts; therefore, candidates must indicate availability for all shifts (days, n ight, weekend, day swing) to be considered. Rotating weekend and holiday coverage may be required. Shift differentials may apply.

DPH Shift Availability: Positions in DPH are designated Disaster Service Workers and may be scheduled to work after-hours, weekends and holidays to cover emergency response.

Work Environment: Incumbents are routinely exposed to dangerous chemicals and infectious materials.

Work Location: ARMC's Laboratory is located at the hospital campus in Colton, CA. The DPH Laboratory is located in Ontario, CA. Candidates must indicate their availability in the Supplemental Questionnaire.

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must qualify under one of the following options:

OPTION 1 : Eight (8) semester (12 quarter) units of completed college coursework in biology or chemistry.

Note : Coursework must be from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of Education. A list of coursework must be submitted with the application.

-OR -

OPTION 2 : Six (6) months of full-time experience receiving, preparing, and processing specimens for tests and analysis in a laboratory.

Desired Qualifications

If you possess a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-1 or CPT-2) license and/or a Bachelor’s degree in a biological science we encourage you to apply!

Experience utilizing Microsoft programs and/or Electronic Health Records (EHR) system is highly desirable.
