The Transportation and Public Works Department Traffic Management Division is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining the traffic signals, streetlights, school zone flashers and all signal systems for the city. The section is seeking a Crew leader to install, repair and maintain all signal systems.

Candidates should have skills related to training subordinate staff, preparing work schedules, monitoring work quality and efficiency, preparing reports, and participating in policy and procedure discussions. Preference will be given to candidates with an Associate’s Degree in Electronics or a related field. Preference will also be given to candidates with specialized licenses or certifications such as Journeyman Electrical Licenses, Bucket Truck, Derrick Digger, IMSA or other standard industry certifications. Candidates with traffic signal, Signal systems, customer service, and computer software experience, such as Microsoft Office or GIS, are also preferred.

This Signal Systems Crewleader position requires working outside standard business hours and working outdoors as discussed below:

• On-call duty is required of everyone and is on a rotating basis. When a person is on-call it means you must be available to respond to calls 24 hours a day for the required period of time.
• You also may be called out after hours, when no on-call, to assist in emergency situation.
• There also may be occasions when working overtime is mandatory to complete a special project.
• This position requires working under less than ideal conditions, such as working outdoors in the heat and the cold, in wet weather, working at heights of 30’ or more, working off step ladders of 6’ to 12, and working in the middle of heavy traffic.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School diploma/GED plus specialized traffic system training
• Four (4) years’ specialized experience installing and repairing traffic signal, streetlights or other traffic signal systems and four years of responsible experience in electronics and/or electric wire installation and maintenance
• Candidates must have an acceptable driving record and possess the ability to obtain a valid Texas Class “A” Driver’s License within six (6) months of hire
• Candidate must possess a IMSA (International Municipal Signal Association) Traffic Signal Bench and/or Field Technician Level 2 certificate at time of hire
• Must pass Drug Screen and Physical

Preferred Qualifications:

• Possession of specialized licenses or certifications such as Journeyman Electrical Licenses, Bucket Truck, Derrick Digger, IMSA or other standard industry certifications
• Traffic signal, Signal systems, detection systems, (video, radar, and inductive loops)
• Computer software experience, such as GIS
• Training subordinate staff, preparing work schedules, monitoring work quality and efficiency of employees responsible for installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals
• Preparing reports and participating in policy and procedure discussions
• Ability to operate and instruct employees in operation of various electronic devices
• Customer service and computer skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Office and GIS software
• Operate Bucket truck and Line Truck
• Knowledge of electrical circuits

The job responsibilities include:

• Prioritize, assign, lead, review and participate in the work of subordinate employees responsible for traffic signals and street lighting systems
• Assist in establishing schedules and methods for providing service and maintenance to signal and street lighting systems; identify resource and material needs; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly
• Participate in the development of policies and procedures; monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures
• Monitors and evaluates the quality, responsiveness, efficiency and effectiveness of traffic signals
• Perform the more technical and complex tasks of the work unit including monitoring of safety practices and procedures

Working Conditions

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking and repetitive motions.

Physical Demands

Medium work - Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly having to move objects.
