General

The San Mateo County Transit District, or SamTrans, is committed to delivering a robust Internship Program giving students the opportunity to apply the skills learned in the classroom, develop professional skills, and acquire a thorough understanding of a unique public transit agency. The San Mateo County Transit District is a Special District, it is the managing agency for SamTrans, Caltrain, San Mateo County Transportation Authority, and the 101 Express Lanes Project.

The Summer Intern program is designed to include real work projects in each area gives students the opportunity to consider a career in the transit industry - including tours of bus and train facilities, opportunities to learn about the multitude of career tracks within transit through information sessions, and professional development such as resume writing and interview skill development. We hope interns will gain invaluable experience by partnering and with and learning from our team of professionals.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Temporary (Non-Exempt or Hourly)

WORK LOCATION: 1250 San Carlos Avenue, San Carlos, California
WORK SCHEDULE: Starting June 23, 2025 - 320 Hours Maximum

Essential Functions & Duties

Sustainability Planning

The selected Intern will assist the Sustainability team with researching, doing outreach, and developing engagement components for the Caltrain Climate Change Vulnerability Study aimed at assessing the risks climate hazards pose to Caltrain’s assets and operations; reporting local, regional, and federal regulation compliance; implementing recommendations and prioritizing actions for the Caltrain Strategic Sustainability Plan; developing the preferred alternative for the SamTrans Bus Base Resiliency Project combating the effects of sea level rise; participating in regional working groups, promoting active transportation, and providing research and data entry as needed.

All employees of the District must perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect oneself, fellow employees and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.

Additional Information

Each Intern selected will work under the general supervision of the Department they have been matched to, they will work with diverse set of supervisors, managers, and directors on various projects.
The selection process may include a phone interview or virtual panel interview. Cover letters are encouraged but not required.

Internships are based in San Carlos, CA. No relocation, housing assistance, or other benefits are provided except for transit passes (SamTrans & Caltrain).

This position is not eligible for benefits.
