Sheriff's Department, Scientific Investigations Division, is recruiting for
Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialists I who will learn to collect, document, and preserve physical evidence at crime scenes; maintain related equipment and instruments; and complete case reports. This is the
trainee level in the series (Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist I, II, III); incumbents work under immediate supervision while receiving training and acquiring the knowledge and skills required for promotion to Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist II (up to $84,822 Annually).

Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist II ($61,693 - $84,882 Annually) upon meeting the minimum requirements for that class. Incumbents must promote within fifteen (15) months or be terminated. Likewise,
Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialists II are eligible for promotion to Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist III ( $66,456 - $91,333 Annually ) upon meeting the minimum requirements for that class and must promote within 36 months or employment will be terminated. Regular status can only be achieved at the Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist III level.
2) Background: Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony.
3) Availability: This department is a "24/7" operation. Applicants must be available for
all shifts, including mandatory overtime; refusal of assigned shift may result in removal from the list or termination. The incumbents will be required to work rotating, night, weekend, day, on-call, and graveyard shifts, as well as holidays and weekends.
4) License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
5) Physical: Incumbents must be able to climb up and down embankments, and hike short distances over rough terrain, while carrying up to 40 lbs; work in inclement (hot/cold/wet) weather; and be able to work while wearing an Air Purifying Respirator (APR).
6) Medical: Incumbents must pass a yearly medical exam to verify the ability to wear an APR.
7) Sponsorship: Please note San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.
Minimum RequirementsMust meet one of the following options:
Option A -
Experience: One (1) year of full-time work experience with a law enforcement agency processing evidence at or from crime scenes. Experience must include technical processing, collecting, or photographing of evidence. Note: Property and evidence storage is not considered qualifying.
-- OR --Option B - Education: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in criminalistics, forensics, or a related physical or natural science, which includes at least 9 semester (12 quarter) units from courses in crime scene investigation , evidence collection , and college-level mathematics (trigonometry is preferred). A list of completed college coursework or transcripts must be submitted with the application.
Note: Degree and/or coursework must be from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Selection Process Examination : Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the
