THE POSITION
The Maintenance Engineer I is the entry-level classification in the Maintenance Engineer series. This individual performs and/or assists in the performance of semi-skilled or skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, remodel and minor construction of County buildings, structures and equipment. This position is subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday, shift assignments and custodial facility assignments, and must respond to emergencies as needed. Performs related duties as assigned.
The Maintenance Engineer II is the full working level classification performing more difficult assignments with a greater degree of proficiency and requiring less supervision than the Level I. This individual performs and/or assists in the performance of semi-skilled or skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, remodel and minor construction of County buildings, structures and equipment. This position is subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday, shift assignments and custodial facility assignments, and must respond to emergencies as needed. Performs related duties as assigned.
This position is subject to a full background check by the District Attorney.

• On-Call Compensation - Employees are compensated $406.00 per week during their on-call rotation. Any work that requires the employee to physically return to work is additionally compensated at time-and-one-half for time worked.

Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Craft/Maintenance/Institutional bargaining unit for labor and relations purposes.

Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months, for a total of eighteen months.

Typical Tasks

• Inspect buildings, structures, and equipment to ascertain need for repair and maintenance work;
• Perform maintenance and repair duties involving electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, and lock work;
• Operate and maintain high and low pressure boilers and related equipment;
• Construct and repair office furniture and cabinets;
• Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, repair and perform preventive maintenance to electrical systems, HVAC systems, refrigeration units and other related equipment, and is responsible for their safe operation;
• Maintain written and electronic records to include daily log readings, mechanical histories and preventive maintenance logs and advise supervisor of boiler, machinery and equipment operation, maintenance and repair;
• Prepare cost estimates for minor construction, maintenance and repair projects;
• Monitor and record energy consumption and make recommendations for energy conservation;
• Perform semi-skilled or skilled maintenance and repair work involving one or more of the required trades;
• Skillfully use and maintain hand and power tools of a variety of building trades;
• Read, interpret and work from sketches, drawings and blueprints;
• Follow oral and written instructions;
• Understand basic building codes;
• Perform heavy physical labor, including lifting 50 pounds or more on some assignments and working in cramped, confined surroundings or on ladders and scaffolding;
• Train subordinate personnel as assigned; and
• Perform other job duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

KNOWLEDGE
Maintenance Engineer I

• Techniques, tools and equipment used in one or more of the following trades; painting (architectural) carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, welding, operate boiler and boiler room equipment;
• Basic computer operations;
• Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in cleaning and keeping equipment in good operational condition; and
• Basic math sufficient to make measurements.

Maintenance Engineer II
Demonstrated knowledge of all Maintenance Engineer I requirements plus;

• Principles and methods of firing and operating boilers and related boiler room equipment;
• Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building and mechanical trades; and
• At least one (1) or more of the following codes: National Electrical Code, the Uniform Building Code, and/or the Uniform Mechanical Code.

SKILLS/ABILITIES
Maintenance Engineer I

• Perform semi-skilled or skilled maintenance and repair work involving one or more required trades;
• Skillfully use and maintain hand and power tools of a variety of building trades,;
• Read, interpret and work from sketches, drawings and blueprints;
• Follow oral and written instructions;
• Understand basic building codes;
• Perform heavy physical labor, including lifting 50 pounds or more on some assignments and working in cramped, confined surroundings or on ladders and scaffolding.
• Lift, bend, stoop, walk on uneven terrain, run and reach overhead;
• Push, pull, squat, twist and turn;
• Work outdoors in the heat, cold and dust, with glare from the sun;
• Work around mists, fumes, vibrations and chemicals;
• Keep records and make simple reports;
• Perform prescribed tasks within assigned time frames; and
• Work efficiently and calmly in emergency situations.

Maintenance Engineer II
Demonstrated ability of all Maintenance Engineer I requirements plus:

• Independently perform skilled repair work, involving one or more of the required trades;
• Make accurate labor and material estimates; and
• Troubleshoot problems and repair as needed.

EDUCATION/EXPERINCE
Maintenance Engineer I
PATTERN I

• Two (2) years of experience in a related building, institutional, or plant maintenance trade.

PATTERN II

• A combination of (1) year of building maintenance, vocational coursework or training; AND
• One (1) year of experience in a related building, institutional or plant maintenance trade.

Maintenance Engineer II
PATTERN I

• Three (3) years of journey level experience in one (1) or more of the following building, institutional, or plant maintenance areas: carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, locksmith, boiler operation and maintenance.

PATTERN II

• A minimum of one (1) year of experience working as a Stanislaus County Maintenance Engineer I.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
