THE DEPARTMENT

The Library and Recreation Department is comprised of two divisions, Library and Recreation & Childcare, that are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of San Rafael residents. The Department's mission is to enrich the community through discovery, learning, and play, and strives to maximize the delivery of strategically aligned programs and services to provide the highest value for the community.

The Library Division operates with a $4.4 million budget and 22 full-time employees in fiscal year 2024/2025. The San Rafael Public Library consists of three branches-Downtown, Pickleweed, and Northgate-and is part of the MARINet consortium. Exciting projects include a $3 million modernization of the Downtown branch, set for completion by July 2025, and a $2 million renovation of the Pickleweed branch, with construction beginning in August 2025. Additionally, the City is planning a new, joint Library and Community Center at Albert Park, while also focusing on operational improvements and championing innovative library programs and services.

THE POSITION

As Library Services Supervisor, you'll oversee the operation of essential library support functions, including circulation, technical services, and other department services. You'll manage and supervise a dedicated team, ensuring effective staff training and development while implementing policies and procedures to enhance library operations. In this role, you'll also contribute to technology planning, resolve complex patron inquiries, and maintain accurate records and statistics for library services.

You'll play a key role in supporting the library's overall goals, assisting with daily operations, and ensuring a welcoming and efficient environment for library visitors. This position is ideal for someone with strong leadership skills, a deep understanding of library processes, and a commitment to excellent customer service.

The ideal candidate for the Library Services Supervisor position will be a dynamic, service-oriented leader with a strong background in public library operations. They should have expertise in library circulation, technical services, and administrative operations, along with a proven ability to manage and enhance library services efficiently. This individual will have demonstrated success in supervising staff, implementing policies and procedures, and optimizing library workflows to enhance efficiency and accessibility. They will be skilled in customer service, adept at handling complex patron inquiries with professionalism, and committed to creating a welcoming and equitable library space for all visitors.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may qualify. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities is:

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record is desirable.
