Position Information

This recruitment is to create an eligibility list to fill 8-12 positions in Company One, our Fire Support Volunteer company.

Under direction of the Fire Chief or designee, to participate in training and drills; respond to fire, rescue and other emergency calls; provide support and assistance to full-time, career City Fire Department personnel as needed.

Job Description

• Respond to all fire, rescue and other emergency alarms as dispatched;
• Assist in firefighting activities which include: set up, use and stowing of hoses, ladders, self-contained breathing apparatus, and other firefighting equipment;
• Assist to ventilate buildings or structures;
• Render first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
• Assist in salvage, overhaul and clean-up operations;
• Set up and perform firefighter decontamination at fire incidents;
• Provide stand-by fire scene watch as needed;
• Follow fire department rules and safety procedures;
• Participate in regularly scheduled drills and training sessions, learning fire suppression, safety, communications and emergency response skills;
• Participate in emergency preparedness and other public education events;
• Operate fire department vehicles not requiring specialized driver licenses (Trained volunteer firefighters who possess specialized driver licenses may drive appropriate fire department vehicles, when there are no full-time/career firefighters on duty and able to drive, with prior approval of the Fire Chief or designee);
• Staff and respond with CFD Breathing Support Unit to provide emergency scene support and refill of SCBA bottles;
• Perform related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• English usage, spelling, and punctuation.

Ability to:

• Understand and follow department rules, guidelines, and firefighting and rescue instructions;
• Ability to learn and develop skills in firefighting techniques and procedures;
• Completion of position taskbook to correspond with knowledge, skills and abilities of a Company 1 Volunteer Firefighter
• Ability to analyze fire behavior and to adopt effective courses of action;
• Ability to retain presence of mind in emergency situations;
• Demonstrate physical endurance, agility and strength in accordance with established standards;
• Endure extremely high emotional and physical stress;
• Perform in emergency and potentially dangerous situations;
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
• Ability to meet physical performance standards established by the City.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education:

• High School diploma or equivalent
• Completion of a California State Fire Training Accredited Firefighter I academy

OR

• California State Fire Training Firefighter 1 certification

Experience:

• Any experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Candidates must possess a valid Class C California Driver License
• Current CA Firefighter Candidate Testing Center CPAT certificate at time of application

Additional Information

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the volunteer firefighter is frequently required to stand; walk, use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear; and taste or smell.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 175 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Environmental Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the volunteer firefighter regularly works in adverse weather conditions. The volunteer firefighter occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, with a risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMS activities when noise levels may be loud.
