Contra Costa County's Health Services Department is seeking to fill the position of Assistant Director of Environmental Health Services. The Assistant Director assists in the planning, administrating, directing and coordinating of programmatic and administrative activities in the Environmental Health Division. The incumbent will be responsible for analyzing and making recommendations on the data management system, organizational issues, financial management, and division policies and procedures. In addition, this role may act for the Director of Environmental Health, in the Director's absence. The department currently has a vacancy located in Concord, CA.

In general, Environmental Health is the prevention, preservation, and improvement of environmental factors affecting the health and safety communities. Contra Costa Environmental Health Division's mission is to protect and promote the health of people throughout Contra Costa County through programs for safe food, safe water for drinking and recreation, and the sanitary management of wastes.

The incumbent may be required to travel to various locations within Contra Costa County.

Minimum Qualifications

License Requirement: Possession of a valid certificate or registration as an Environmental Health Specialist issued by the State Department of Health Services. Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process.

Experience: Five years of full-time experience or its equivalent as an Environmental Health Specialist in an agency involved with environmental health, regulations and enforcement of which at least two years included supervisory or management responsibility.

Substitution: Possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in environmental health, public health, health science, public administration or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. No substitution is allowed for the required supervisory experience.

Selection Process

Application Filing and Evaluation: All applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application. Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.Oral Board Assessment: Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an online assessment. The online assessment will measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job and candidates must achieve an average passing score of 70% or higher on each of the competencies, as well as an overall passing score of 70% or higher. These competencies may include but are not limited to: Critical Thinking, Decision Making, Coaching & Developing Others, Building & Maintaining Relationships and Managing & Facilitating Change. (Weighted 100%)
The Oral Board is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) during the week of April 23, 2025.

The Oral Board will be administered remotely using a computer or mobile device such as a tablet or smartphone. You will need access to a reliable internet connection to take the assessment, as well as a computer or mobile device with a camera.

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
