Hours: 8 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday

Overview
NYS Parks is a diverse agency that oversees more than 250 parks, historic sites, recreational trails, golf courses, boat launches and more, which were visited by a record 88.3 million people in 2024. The Capital Bureau within the NYS Parks manages the design and construction of new parks and park facilities, as well as the rehabilitation of existing facilities, structures, and infrastructure. The Bureau also includes an Energy division, which is responsible for de-carbonizing the agency's operations and transitioning NYS Parks facilities to renewable energy.

The Long Island District of the NYS Parks Capital Bureau is looking for talented college students studying architecture, landscape architecture, or engineering to assist with design and construction management at various state parks in Long Island such as Jones Beach, Robert Moses, Montauk Point and Belmont Lake State Park. Students may intern up to 37.5 hours per week during the summer (from June through August).

Job Duties
•Participate in design of new and rehabilitation projects of various systems for bathhouses, maintenance and concession buildings, playgrounds, athletic fields, trails and coastal and green infrastructure.
•Assists in preparing time schedules, cost estimates, material approvals, and other tasks associated with the supervision of construction projects.
•Assists in processing necessary paperwork for construction contracts such as: procurement RFQs for purchase orders, minority business requirements search, insurance coverage, wage rate documents, claims, releases, payment records.
•Review submittals, plans and specifications
•Participate and record minutes at meetings
•Assist current construction projects by visiting construction sites and attending meetings.
•Draft NYS Parks standard details and write technical specifications to assist with the preparation of projects going out to bid.
•Prepare presentations and assist with project organization and documentation.
•Records data and prepares records and maintains files necessary for the functioning of the Capital district unit.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligibility
The program is open to junior or senior full-time SUNY students enrolled in an accredited four-year bachelor’s degree program or in and graduate degree program in architecture, landscape architecture or engineering.

Qualifications
Effective verbal and written communications skills critical, students should be proficient in AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite and MS Office.

Applicants who are selected must be able to present original unexpired documentation to show their identity, and employment authorization in the United States. If selected, applicants must possess a driver’s license and have the ability to drive to the office and project sites.
