Transportation Scheduler/Router
Description
DEFINITION: Under the supervision of an assigned supervisor, schedule and coordinate efficient and effective school bus transportation for students requiring service; assist and provide support to dispatch staff; provide support for computers used in the department; perform other work consistent with the job description.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed.
• Preparation and maintenance of special and regular education routes, including minimum days and special schedules, ensuring they are accurate and complete, using available resources as efficiently as possible.
• Assist dispatcher and provide dispatch backup as needed.
• Work with, maintain, and assist in maintaining various computers and data files, including but not limited to: student, geographic, boundary, field trip data used in the department and elsewhere in the district.
• Analyze routes for efficiency, recommending and implementing upon direction, changes as needed.
• Review school bell times, traffic patterns and bus stop locations, recommending and facilitating changes necessary to improve safety, operations and efficiency upon direction.
• Ensure parents, students, schools, drivers, and others have accurate information and are adequately informed of all changes and procedures that may affect them.
• Maintain accurate records and current information on laws as they pertain to school pupil transportation, district policies and contracts.
• Generate detailed reports and make presentations as required. Provide assistance to and confer with drivers, students, parents, schools, departmental personnel, and others as required, ensuring a high quality working relationship exists in all communications.
• Assist transportation workers regarding work methods, procedures and problem solving.
• Substitute as School Bus Driver as needed.
• Other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
• Transportation routing and scheduling including computer systems application. Laws and regulations governing the transportation of pupils in the State of California.
• Materials, equipment and standard practices of transporting all types of students.
SKILL AND ABILITY TO:
• Efficiently route buses.
• Operate a computer, using standard PC applications, Versa Trans software, and other software used in the department.
• Analyze situations and recommend an effective course of action.
• Deal with high stress situations in a calm and tactful manner.
• Satisfactorily complete tasks and assignments in a timely manner and meet established deadlines.
• Read, write and speak at the level for successful job performance.
• Work with limited supervision within the framework of standard policies and procedures.
• Work cooperatively with community, employees, faculty and parents in a friendly and effective manner to maintain the best possible working relationships.
• Maintain and prepare accurate records and reports.
• Follow oral and written instructions and provide clear and logical oral and written instruction and gui dance to others.
• Provide leadership in a positive, open manner and be focused on providing the best service possible to all customers of the department.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of highschool. At least four years of increasingly responsible experience in school pupil transportation. Experience and/or education related to home to school and special education routing for school pupil transportation.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION TO ATTACH: Valid California Driver's License; California Class B Driver's License Valid California School Bus Driver's Certificate, First Aid and Medical Certificates.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Require vision (which may be corrected) to read small print. Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects. Lower body mobility may not be required. Perform lifting, pushing and/or pulling which does not exceed 50 pounds and is an infrequent aspect of the job. Is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. May be required to use personal vehicle in the course of employment. May be required to attend periodic evening meetings and/or to travel within and out of District boundaries to attend meetings. May be required to work evenings or weekends.
EXAMINATION WEIGHT:
Assessments may consist of a written, oral and/or performance examinations.
FIRST EXAMINATION: 50%
SECOND EXAMINATION*: 50%
*Administered only to those who pass the first examination. Qualified candidates will be notified of the minimum passing points for each examination part.
