About the Opportunity

THE POSITION
The Aircraft Mechanic is responsible for maintaining all Sheriff’s Department aircraft, rotor and fixed wing. This individual will need to have the necessary experience to be able to work alone, without supervision and complete all tasks needed to maintain the airships airworthiness. The individual will be required to follow Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, have reasonable to intermediate computer skills and maintain aircraft records and logs.

Part-time extra-help is a provisional classification where permanent status may not be obtained. This position is subject to overtime, standby, shift, and callback assignments and will perform related duties as assigned. This position is non-benefited except for participation in a 401a program with Nationwide.

Typical Tasks

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Maintain Sheriff’s Department helicopters and fixed wing aircraft according to the Federal Aviation Regulations and aircraft manufacture requirements.
• Perform routine airworthiness inspections of aircraft: pre-flight; service; clean and maintain helicopters in flight ready condition; and post-flight.
• Change time-life components on airframes and engines; disassemble, repair, and reassemble engine and airframe components; repair and replace defective parts.
• Maintain all records and logs, Airworthiness Directives, Service Bulletins, and Notice of Parts reporting malfunction.
• Consults and works with pilots, both in flight and on the ground, as to probable cause of malfunction or unusual operating conditions; participates in maintenance test flights to ascertain aircraft airworthiness; conducts preflight and post-flight inspections to ensure continued airworthiness.
• Maintains hangar and work area cleanliness and orderly housekeeping.
• Prepares and maintains required reports and records’ may be responsible for developing record keeping policies.
• Perform unscheduled maintenance due to damage, malfunction, and factory changes; order proper parts and tools as necessary.
• Perform daily, monthly, annually, bi-annually inspections. Maintains the general functionality of the fuel delivery system on the Air Support fuel truck.
• Performs other duties as assigned for the Air Unit.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

Knowledge

• FAA requirements pertaining to rotary and fixed wing aircraft maintenance and safety;
• Theory, operation and repair of Bell 206 Long Ranger and 407 helicopters and Cessna 172 and Cessna 206 aircraft engines, transmissions, electrical, fuel and computer systems and other rotary and fixed wing aircraft tools, diagnostics equipment and servicing procedures;
• Occupational hazards and safety practices;
• Garmin computer systems.

Skills/Abilities

• Work independently, prioritize work, coordinate activities and meet critical deadlines
• Diagnose mechanical, structural and electrical problems and perform repairs;
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
• Maintain shop and service records;
• Interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations
• Assess problems and needs; draw conclusions, formulate recommendations and project consequences of recommendations
• Weld, perform sheet metal repair, aircraft painting, aircraft electrical repair, basic avionics repair, and engine repair.
• Perform blade tracking and balancing of main and tail rotor.
• Read, understand, interpret and cross-reference rotary and fixed wing aircraft maintenance manuals, charts, graphs and blueprints;
• Ability to read and write English and write reports

Stoop, bend, crawl, kneel; climb and work on ladders; pull or push 75 pounds and lift up to 50 pounds.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

License or Certificate

• FAA Airframe & Powerplant License (A&P);
• FAA Inspection Authorization License (I.A.) within 12 months of assignment; and
• Model specific service school is desired and will be required within twelve (12) months of employment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Three (3) years, in class, full time experience within the past five (5) years in the maintenance and repair of Bell 206 Long Ranger and 407 helicopters and Cessna 172 and Cessna 206 aircraft.
