THE PORT OF LONG BEACH IS SEEKING A MANAGING DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING SERVICES

(This is an at-will position)

Salary Range: $253,055 - 354,277

THE ROLE

The Managing Director of Engineering Services is a pivotal executive leadership role responsible for the stewardship of the Port’s assets and infrastructure and overseeing the Engineering Services Bureau, which provides a comprehensive range of engineering functions, including design, construction management, program management, project controls, maintenance, and surveying. The role demands extensive experience leading a large staff and managing large-scale engineering projects, with a proven track record in leadership and strategic planning. The Managing Director is responsible for a bureau of 291 teammates and an annual $368 million capital improvement budget.

THE TEAM

Comprised of six divisions, the Engineering Services Bureau stewards the Port’s assets and infrastructure through the execution of design, construction management, program management, project controls, maintenance, and surveying functions associated with what is consistently, one of the largest capital programs of any port in the country and forecasted at $3.2B over the next decade. This capital program addresses all aspects of the Port’s infrastructure ecosystem, including waterways, in-water fills, marine terminals, rail and roadway systems, as well as a wide variety of general public works infrastructure. This currently includes the $1.815B Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility ("America's Green Gateway") being designed and built to transform the Port’s rail system and move cargo in and out of the Port more efficiently, supporting economic growth, while reducing impacts on the environment and the surrounding community. It may also include a new 400-acre floating offshore wind staging and integration terminal (Pier Wind), which is currently being evaluated in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act.

Required Desirables

The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background handling progressively challenging engineering projects, supervising designs, reviewing construction and survey work, reviewing schedules and estimates, maintaining infrastructure assets, and resolving issues between teams of professional and technical managers. You must have knowledge of design, project management, construction management, project controls, surveying, and maintenance. To thrive, you will need to be flexible, strategic, innovative, and forward-thinking with excellent client/customer relation skills and exceptional public speaking/presentation skills. It is essential you have demonstrated leadership that includes maturity and the ability to articulate an organization’s and others. This role requires the ability to acclimate quickly in a fast-paced environment of innovation and collaboration, and the willingness to employ creative solutions in structuring business.
