SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Start Date: May - June 2025
End Date: August - September 2025Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (6) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).Two paid summer full-time intern positions are available: one with the Transportation and Traffic Division and one with the Engineering Division - Special Projects Section. The positions are an excellent opportunity for a College Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student wishing to obtain work experience in the Civil Engineering field. This internship will involve office work and some field visits. Selected individuals must be on-site at the City of Sunnyvale (City Hall).

Hours: Eight hours a day, five days a week over the summer months. The selected candidate for this position will work under the supervision of a higher-level supervisor on weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Essential Job Functions(May include, but are not limited to, the following):
- Collect and analyze traffic data
- Conduct field observations
- Perform transportation analyses and studies
- Assist City staff in preparation and review of signing/striping plans, traffic signal and construction plans, and Temporary Traffic Control Plans
*Other responsibilities if selected for the Engineering Division - Special Projects Section, may include: - Attend and participate in Capital Improvement Project Construction meetings and walks at the Water Pollution Control Plant.
- Coordinate with City staff and construction management team to assist Engineering staff with Project communication.
- Support Engineering staff as needed with Construction Processes such as Request for Information, Invoices and Construction Change orders.
- Assist Engineering staff with other duties as desired, including some administrative tasks as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONSPosition requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, and turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine motor coordination when using a computer keyboard. Near vision is required when reading plans, written reports and other documents, and far vision is required when performing field work. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds is also required. The job duties may expose the employee to the outdoors, which may include exposure to fumes, dust, allergens, and air contaminants. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.
Minimum Qualifications- College Sophomore, Junior, Senior or Graduate Student having completed at least one course in Civil Engineering
- Positive work attitude, reliable and responsible
- Good communication and writing skills
- Proficient computer skills with basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. AutoCAD and GIS experience are a plus
- Good organizational skills, detail-oriented and good record keeper
- Interest in Civil Engineering and willingness to learn
- Willingness to travel to various sites within the City utilizing City of Sunnyvale Vehicle.
License/Certificates: Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California class C driver's license and a safe driving record.
