DEFINITION:

Operates or assists in the operation of a store or warehouse.

Essential Job Functions

Inspects incoming shipments by verifying descriptions, quantities, and/or identification numbers of received materials; performs basic mathematical calculations; and examines shipping cartons and containers. When necessary, this includes unbanding and unstacking items to ensure shipment accuracy. Any incorrect or damaged items are identified and documented before being received into inventory. Any damaged, defective materials or discrepancies should be reported to the supervisor/buyer.

Utilizes a computer to receive goods electronically by entering receipts and goods received into eCaps (Electronic County Wide Accounting and Purchasing System).

Loads/unloads trucks and moves items in their storage locations by considering their size, shape, weight, quantity, type, stock number, and/or other storage factors (e.g., requirements for safe storage of hazardous materials), either manually or using lifting aids (e.g., material handling equipment) to ensure safe and efficient storage and retrieval of inventory.

Prepares items for mailing, shipping, or will-call by picking, packaging, weighing, labeling, palletizing, properly securing shipments, etc. Uses shrink wrap, marking pens, box cutters, and bungee or strap ties to fulfill requisition requests as they are received.

Participates in manual inventory procedures by accurately counting stocks, recording/ tagging property assigned to the department for yearly auditing, performing basic mathematical calculations, and recording information of inventory levels on hard copy forms to report accurate information on inventory levels, according to a routine schedule or as directed by a supervisor.

Interacts with representatives of outside agencies (e.g., delivery personnel), coworkers, and supervisors, verbally (either in person or on the phone) and in writing (e.g., e-mail), to convey complete, accurate, and up to date information whenever approached or as directed by a supervisor.

Transport shipments and/or salvage of surplus materials by operating a light truck (e.g., pick up, bobtail, flatbed, or cargo van) according to established County procedures and in full compliance with motor vehicles code requirements to deliver requisitioned materials, files and containers, retrieve needed stock, or dispose of discarded materials, as needed.

Procures inventory by contacting vendors, comparing price quotes, and arranging shipment of materials to off-site locations as needed or directed by a supervisor, and following County guidelines when inventory is low or new inventory requests are received.

Supervises warehouse personnel by planning, assigning, monitoring, and coordinating work activities; inspects work for conformance to establish standards and procedures; communicates goals and expectations; provides performance feedback and/or initiates disciplinary action; participates in the formal performance evaluation process; and other human resource-related activities (e.g., participating in interviewing job candidates) to ensure the quality, quantity, and efficiency of work performed by personnel, in a large warehouse or section of a large warehouse facility.

Supervises warehouse operations by monitoring warehouse workload to determine staffing needs and maintain appropriate staffing levels; monitors computerized warehouse inventory control systems to ensure data is accurate; reviews and analyzes perpetual inventory and other records to ensure the maintenance of optimal stock levels, the tracking and documentation of inventory shrinkage, and the removal of depreciated items; oversees the conduct of physical inventory count; oversees the receiving of new inventory, and coordinating the planning, routing, and scheduling of regular and emergency deliveries of supplies and equipment to department sites to ensure the efficient and effective operation of a large warehouse or a section of a large warehouse facility.

Trains warehouse personnel in all aspects of warehouse work, including proper care and preservation of items received and stored, methods of material handling, proper use of equipment, safe work methods and procedures, Cal OSHA requirements, and other subject matters, as deemed necessary. Identifies training needs, determines the most appropriate training method (i.e., on-the-job, formal classroom, computer-based, tailgates [informal job site meeting], etc.), delivering or delegating the delivery of the training, and assessing the effectiveness of the training to ensure that staff are sufficiently knowledgeable and competent to perform the work assigned to them.

Works with the Safety Officer/Manager in the event of an incident, by writing incident reports, taking notes and/or observing the scene of the incident to identify the cause of the industrial accident and to obtain information that can be used to eliminate safety hazards in the workplace as incidents occur or as directed by the manager/supervisor.

Adheres to facility security protocols by keeping track of human traffic and axis according to the established policies and procedures to ensure the security of the warehouse materials and inventory are not jeopardized.

Requirements

One year of store keeping, procurement, or related experience at the level of Warehouse Worker I* or Procurement Aid**.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation may be required when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS:

III - Moderate. This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

VETERAN’S CREDIT:

If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran’s credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to Rena Kamasawa at rrccexams@rrcc.lacounty.gov .

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS INFORMATION

*Experience at the level of Warehouse Worker I in the County of Los Angeles performs a full range of warehouse work by handling materials and supplies, operating a store or warehouse, or section of a large storage facility, maintaining property records, receiving and packing variety of items, or by assisting a higher level warehouse worker by acting as a full-time lead person or by performing a combination of responsible supply-clerical duties.

**Experience at the level of Procurement Aid in the County of Los Angeles prepares various procurement documents, maintains related clerical records and controls, and process orders and requisitions for a wide variety of supplies or services.

Part I: A Situational Judgment Test, weighted 75%, assessing the following:

Part II: A Training and Experience Evaluation, weighted 25%, assessing the following:

Applicants will need to meet the requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on each weighted test part in order to be placed on eligible list.

TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS

If you have taken identical components recently for other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:


Qualified candidates who passed the assessment with a score of 70% or higher are placed on the eligible list for a period of six (6) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies within RR/CC as they occur. Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
