Parks Maintenance Worker I/II

The Parks and Recreation Department is looking to fill one (1) vacancy at the Parks Maintenance Worker I or Parks Maintenance Worker II level, dependent upon the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. This recruitment may also be used to fill future Parks Maintenance Worker vacancies that may occur within the next 12 months. This position will primarily be assigned to the Petaluma Swim Center, however desired candidates will have general knowledge of experience maintaining parks, landscapes, irrigation, and turf care. Candidates with experience in pool maintenance and possession of a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certificate are encouraged to apply.

Perform landscape, park, and pool maintenance duties at the swim center, in parks, medians, and other landscaped areas.

Class Characteristics
General supervision is provided by a higher-level supervisor or manager; responsibilities may include the indirect supervision of support staff.

Parks Maintenance Worker I

The entry-level class in the series that initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in park and tree maintenance. This class is alternately staffed with Parks Maintenance Worker II.

Parks Maintenance Worker II

The journey-level class in this series, fully competent to perform the full range of park and landscape maintenance duties. This class is distinguished from Parks Maintenance Lead Worker who provides direction and work review to several Parks Maintenance Workers and/or crews.

Duties

Perform general grounds maintenance of raking, sweeping, garbage pick up, and rest room cleaning

Mow, edge, trim, aerate, fertilize, and renovate large and small turf areas.

Install, repair, and maintain irrigation systems.

Performs various operational and maintenance duties on City pools.

Perform pest control operations using Integrated Pest Maintenance (IPM) techniques, which include identification and diagnoses of pest problems.

Maintain, construct, and repair park structures.

Keep tools & equipment in proper working order.

Identify and report safety hazards.

Assist with maintenance of City pools.

Respond to questions and complaints from the public.

Use of equipment to include, but not limited to, dump trucks, tractors, riding mowers, walk behind mowers, edger’s, chain saws, weed eaters, and blowers.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Theories, principles, methods, materials, and equipment used in landscape cultivation and park maintenance.

Safety practices and procedures relating to the work.

Recordkeeping methods related to the work.

Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to the education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to gain such knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Parks Maintenance Worker I

Experience:

Experience in landscape and park maintenance, and/or course work in horticulture, or landscape maintenance and construction.

Parks Maintenance Worker II

Experience:

In addition to the above, two years of experience in landscape and park maintenance, and/or course work in horticulture, or landscape maintenance and construction at a level equivalent to the Park Maintenance Worker I class.

Certifications/Licenses:

Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.

Possession of a valid Qualified Applicators Certificate or License is desirable.

Possession of a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certificate is highly desirable.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to perform heavy physical labor, including having sufficient strength to lift and carry tools and materials weighing up to 90 pounds. While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment may be moderate to loud depending on working conditions.
