Classification Salary Range: $3,722 - $5,840 per month

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $3,722 - $3,800 per month.

The final salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

About the Department/Position:

Under the immediate supervision of the Director of Facilities Services and by schedules or periodic instructions, the Groundsworker performs general gardening work and maintains the grounds in an assigned campus area.

Typical Activities:
Groundworkers plant, cultivate, fertilize, water and spray ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns, and flowers; rake leaves; hoe weeds; clean trash from assigned areas including parking lots; prepare and treat soils for planting; maintain hoses, sprinklers, tools, supplies and equipment in proper condition and repair; trim trees, hedges, and shrubs and erect tree supports; may operate and perform minor maintenance on small power-operated pavement sweepers, power mowers, small riding mowers, and other gardening power equipment; may assist in the preparing and lining of athletic fields for events; may occasionally assist a qualified specialist in sprinkler repair, spraying, tree trimming, or nursery functions; may drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties; and may provide lead work direction to students and unskilled assistants.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for grounds maintenance and landscape installation, which includes but is not limited to the following: stringline trimming, hedge trimming, weed abatement, weeding, blowing, seeding, mulching, watering, irrigation maintenance, and minor system repair, fertilization, planting, cultural practices, low branching of trees, assisting on landscape projects, trash pick up, emptying trash receptacles, planting flowers, soil cultivation, washing of hardscape, sanitizing and disinfecting campus amenities, power washing, leaf raking, spot irrigation of dry areas, perform minor repairs and maintenance on small tools and equipment, lining of athletic fields, sports field maintenance, baseball and softball field dug out cleaning, tree staking, utilization of all small tools and equipment related to grounds maintenance and basic landscape installation.

Minimum Qualifications:

• One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.
  
• **A motor vehicle such as a truck or electric cart will require the successful candidate(s} to have a valid driver's license.
  **The successful candidate{s} will be required to take and pass a physical exam.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge:
  Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods; general knowledge of proper methods of planning, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers and of the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.
  
• Ability:
  Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California; ability to perform strenuous physical work as described in this class; mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; ability to learn to operate skillfully small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two years of commercial and professional experience in grounds maintenance and landscape installation.
