The JobThe
San Bernardino County Fire Protection District's Office of the Fire Marshal , is inviting
Fire Prevention Officers (FPO) to join our team. FPOs perform a variety of complex fire prevention, inspection and code enforcement duties for residential, commercial and industrial occupancies. FPOs also perform vegetation inspections in the Wildfire Risk Areas; conduct the more complex residential, commercial and industrial inspections; perform special event inspections; and conduct fire prevention-related education programs. Additionally, FPOs research, prepare and issue fire and life safety notices, corrections and permits; provide technical assistance to the public, members of the Department, and other agencies; may perform public information and damage assessment duties; and perform minor plan reviews.

Work Hours: May occasionally require working overtime, weekends, and/or holidays for special inspections.
Physical: Incumbents frequently bend, stoop, kneel, work on rough and uneven terrain, are subject to extreme climates, and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Employees are frequently exposed to dust, vapor, hazardous materials, noise and extremes in temperature or humidity.
Travel: Travel within and outside the County may be required. A valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be provided at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
Certifications: Must obtain California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) Fire Inspector I certification within 12 months of hire or may be terminated.
Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.
Minimum Requirements Must meet BOTH Certifications and Experience requirement: CERTIFICATES: Please attach certificates to application.
Must possess California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D course
or equivalent course certificates.
Equivalent Certificates:
CSFM
- Fire Prevention Officer (or Fire Prevention Officer 1A, 1B & 1C course certificates)
CSFM, Pro Board, NFPA, DOD, or ICC
--AND-- EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of work experience with the primary responsibility of performing fire inspections related to fire prevention, fire protection, building and safety, code enforcement or closely related field; experience must include a working knowledge of fire protection, and life safety codes, ordinances, standards, and inspection practices pertaining to building use, design, and construction.
NOTE: Ensure your work history clearly details qualifying experience, including your experience in prevention, planning, building and safety codes and ordinances, code enforcement, fire suppression systems, and fire alarm systems, as well as any experience as a lead worker.
Desired QualificationsThe ideal candidate will possess a related college degree and CSFM Fire Inspector I and II Certifications. The fully-qualified candidate will have a proven ability of reading comprehension skills, interpreting complex passages and applying complex code regulations fairly and appropriately; and will possess excellent customer service skills, communicating effectively with the public, and demonstrating a drive to excel while working both independently and as part of a cohesive team. This prepared candidate will possess knowledge of fire suppression and alarm systems, and in-depth knowledge of various codes and ordinances pertaining to fire and life safety related to building design, construction and site development, acquired through diverse work experience as a Fire Inspector.
