The Job

The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District's Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM), is recruiting for Fire Prevention Officer Trainees , which are apprentice-level positions for new staff learning to perform as a fully qualified Fire Prevention Officer with our agency. Under direct supervision, the Fire Prevention Officer Trainee will conduct routine state-mandated inspections while developing the skills to perform more complex fire prevention, inspection and code enforcement duties as competencies are achieved. As Trainees achieve those competencies, they will begin conducting more complex residential, commercial and industrial inspections; perform vegetation inspections in the Wildfire Risk Areas; and research, prepare and issue fire and life safety notices, corrections and permits. Additionally, Trainees will conduct fire prevention-related education programs; provide technical assistance to the public, members of the Department, and other agencies; perform special event inspections; and may perform public information and damage assessment duties.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Pre-Employment Process: Must successfully complete a background check prior to appointment.
Work Hours: May occasionally require working overtime, weekends, and/or holidays for special inspections.
Physical: Incumbents frequently bend, stoop, kneel, work on rough and uneven terrain, are subject to extreme climates, and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Employees are frequently exposed to dust, vapor, hazardous materials, noise and extremes in temperature or humidity.
Travel: Travel within and outside the County may be required. A valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be provided at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
Certifications: Must obtain California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) Fire Inspector 1C and 1D course certificates within 12 months of hire, or may be terminated.
Promotion: Fire Prevention Officer Trainees are eligible for promotion to Fire Prevention Officer upon completing a training program, including the County Taskbook, and receiving a recent satisfactory work progress report. Trainees must qualify for promotion to Fire Prevention Officer within 12 months or employment will be terminated.
Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.

Minimum Requirements

Copies of certificates must be attached.

Certificates: Must possess California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) Fire Inspector 1A and 1B, or equivalent course certificates.

NOTE: Experience in a government agency, private corporation, or any large organization with responsibility for performing fire/safety inspections is desired and should be clearly detailed in your work history; also include any experience in prevention, planning, building and safety codes and ordinances, code enforcement, suppression systems, and alarm systems.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have related experience and possess CSFM Fire Inspector I certification, in addition to possessing excellent reading comprehension skills to interpret complex passages and code regulations. The ideal candidate will demonstrate extraordinary customer service skills, communicating effectively with the public, showing a drive to excel while working both independently and as part of a cohesive team. This prepared candidate will possess knowledge of fire suppression and alarm systems, as well as knowledge of various codes and ordinances pertaining to fire and life safety related to building design, construction and site development.
