The Position

The Contra Costa County Department of Conservation and Development (DCD) offers an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in building a career in building permit services and development review.

DCD is responsible for facilitating land use and development in alignment with the County General Plan. The department also administers and enforces the Building and Zoning Codes and coordinates a range of programs that support safe, sustainable development across the County. DCD is currently seeking to fill four (4) vacancies in the Building Plan Checker I classification.

This role is ideal for individuals with experience in construction or permit processing who are ready to apply their technical knowledge in a supportive and growth-oriented public agency. Under close supervision, the Building Plan Checker I processes permit and plan check applications, utilizes an automated permit system to issue permits, and performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency, or high school proficiency certificate.

Experience: One (1) year of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience in the processing and issuance of building permits or experience in construction which provided knowledge of construction plans and the California Building Code, California Residential Code, and/or California Fire Code.

Substitution for Experience: Nine (9) semester or twelve (12) quarter units from an accredited college in construction technology or closely related field may be substituted for six (6) months of the required experience.

Selection Process

Assessment Type: The assessment type and process will depend on the number of qualified candidates. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and advance to the assessment phase may be invited to participate in an Oral Board Assessment designed to evaluate key competencies relevant to the Building Plan Checker I classification. These may include but are not limited to: Delivering Results, Using Technology, Attention to Detail, Self-Management, and Oral Communication. Candidates must achieve overall average score of 70% or higher to continue in the process. (Weighted 100%).

CONVICTION HISTORY

After you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). DISASTER SERVICE WORKER

All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
