The Department:

Silicon Valley Power

Since 1896, Silicon Valley Power (SVP) has provided electricity for residents and businesses in Santa Clara. The Electric Department has a budgeted staff of 198 employees who provide such diverse services as operating, maintaining and dispatching electric service, engineering, system planning, administrative and financial management, marketing, customer services, power trading, outdoor Wi-Fi services and dark fiber leasing services, all of which work together to make SVP successful for the City and its residents.

The Position(s):

Fiber Engineering Intern II/III

The SVP Fiber program supports and maintains SVP’s fiber network for Santa Clara’s Electric Utility by managing its fiber infrastructure (i.e. fiber conduit, cable, manholes/handholes, splicing termination and testing services). It also allows for future development of communications fiber infrastructure to support SVP operations and City-based applications. Lastly, SVP Fiber also ensures that Santa Clara is a technology and innovation hub by providing the needs of local businesses and schools.

Transmission & Distribution Intern II/III

The Transmission and Distribution Division is responsible for the maintenance and construction of the SVP electric network consisting of over 580 miles of overhead and underground circuits. The Transmission and Distribution Division is currently overhauling processes for asset management, system inspections and work management.


System Support Intern II/III

We are looking for a proactive self-starter who is eager to apply the skills they are learning, while learning new skills and concepts in a practical environment. The Desktop Technical Intern position provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in troubleshooting and supporting desktop systems, mobile devices, applications/software, and network-related issues. You will assist with day-to-day desktop support activities and collaborate with the IT team to maintain smooth operations of IT services within the organization

Electric Meter Shop Intern II/III

1. Update and analyze monthly Data Center Load Research Reports to identify trends in power consumption.

2. Compile monthly "No Usage" Reports to flag meters with zero or estimated usage, supporting targeted field investigations.

3. Generate and dispatch work orders for Troublemen and Meter Technicians, ensuring timely issue resolution.

4. Process meter installation requests and complete photovoltaic (PV) project documentation using PowerClerk.

5. Manage and update customer and meter records using NorthStar utility billing software.

6. Obtain meter data from NetSense as requested by the Finance department.

7. Convert handwritten field logs into structured Excel datasets for streamlined record-keeping and accessibility.

8. Support the department with form revisions, data collection, filing, and administrative reporting.

9. Conduct research and assist in compiling data for workflow efficiency studies, departmental initiatives, and special projects.

10. Manage office inventory and maintain organization and functionality of the shop workspace.

11. Retrieve electric meter data from the field or shop and record completed work order tags in NorthStar.

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

The hourly rate for the position is:
- Student Intern I: $18.20 - $22.00
- Student Intern II: $21.69 - $26.25
- Student Intern III: $23.97 - $29.00
