About the Role:
This role is an integral part of our engineering team supporting multiple programs to provide assistance, solutions and enforcement across all of unincorporated King County. As a Stormwater Supervising Engineer (Engineer IV), you will supervise the facility inspection team, provide technical assistance, and solutions to landowners private and public and will require well developed communication skills in the delivery of customer service. Within this role, you will also be responsible for designing, managing, and implementing small construction and maintenance projects, as well as assess and determine solutions for drainage challenges affecting a variety of stakeholders, and ensure compliance with King County code related to drainage and surface water management. This position may require solo field work year-round, in inclement weather and in aquatic environments.

This position performs work remotely and onsite at field locations and in the office.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing:

Supervise the Inspection group, a team of eight ( 8) positions. Develop and fulfill annual objectives and targets and provide quality control of the group ’ s work. Assess, develop and implement staff opportunities for learning and growth . Coordinate and oversee the inspection of various stormwater facilities and components including for commercial, residential, regional, FMD , Solid Waste, Wastewater and Rainwise sites, as well as others as assigned.


Manage and implement SWS’s Commercial Inspection and Enforcement programs.


I mplement SWS’s SWM Fee Discount Review program .


Respond to Stakeholder requests while using verbal and written communication and conflict resolution skills, problem assessment and analysis , and knowledge of design manuals and regulatory code /requirements to facilitate work.


Multi-disciplinary collaboration and communication with varied stakeholders, residents and decision-makers.


Participate in SWS’s Emergency Response Team which may include after-hours response .


Other tasks as assigned.



Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring:

• College degree in Engineering or similar area of study, or five ( 5) years experience assessing, analyzing and solving stormwater and/ or surface water problems directly related to the maintenance, operations or construction of stormwater or surface water facilities.
• Two (2) years experience as a supervisor or five ( 5) years experience as a lead responsible for a team .
• Experience with performance management, including evaluating team performance metrics, providing constructive feedback, and implementing performance improvement plans , for direct reports or team members .
• Experience assessing , analyzing and solv ing stormwater and/or surface water problems.
• Experience using project management/planning techniques and principles.
• Effective communication of technical details in a clear and concise manner to diverse audiences .
• Commitment and understanding of equity and a demonstrated skill establishing and maintaining work relationships with a diverse group of people.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

• Remote and Onsite Work Details: Employees in this role will work remotely from a home location, with onsite visits 1-5 days per week . There is also a division expectation to attend one (1) in-person collaboration day per month. The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly. Onsite reporting locations may be at various King County worksites including the collaboration space at King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104). This work arrangement promotes work-life-balance and reduces carbon footprint under the department’s vision of Green Where We Work .
• Remote Work Location Requirement: Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to meet workplace reporting requirements.
• Work Schedule: This full-time position will work a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. The typical work schedule is 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday- Friday. The candidate in this role will be expected to p articipate in SWS’s Emergency Response Team which may include after-hours response .
• Union Representation: This position is represented by PROTEC Local 17A bargaining unit.
• Physical Requirement: This position will have o pportunities for o ccasional field work in inclement weather and uneven terrain. There is potential for this position to have infrequent exposure to confined spaces and/or loud noise environments.
