This position is Extended Part-time with a schedule requirement of 32 hours per week.

THE POSITION:

This skilled graphic design position supports the Irvine Police Department’s Public Information Office. The role focuses on creating visually compelling materials using Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.) and other professional design tools. Knowledge of advanced design software beyond tools such as Canva and mobile applications is required.

The successful candidate will be an experienced, self-directed designer capable of creating original, high-impact visual content from concept to completion, including storyboarding, developing and presenting design comps, and producing polished, from-scratch designs with minimal input from the requester.

Event and portrait photography, videography, or copywriting skills are highly desired.

While the work supports public information and media relations efforts, this is not a social media management, public relations, or public information officer role.

Work is performed under the direction of the Media Services Coordinator III and requires demonstrated expertise in professional design, branding, and visual communication.

YOUR IMPACT :

• Design, organize, and illustrate from concept to completion various marketing/promotional digital and print materials for department and City initiatives and events such as:
  • Fliers
  • Brochures
  • Newsletters
  • Scalable vector graphics
  • Posters
  • Banners
  • Maps

• Generate new design concepts and graphics solutions for varied projects; select media for visual presentations, including graphics, photography, type style and size, and colors.
• Take direction and quickly generate graphics and content during emergencies and tight deadlines
• Administer the print process from design through the final production.
• Meet with department staff to determine the scope of projects and clarify the intended message and the proposed audience for the material. Develop graphics and visual images to illustrate the message.
• Use a camera to photograph and document City events and programs. Select, edit, manipulate, and retouch photographs to enhance their quality for digital and print publication. Select appropriate photographs for design projects and catalogs, and maintain the library of digital photo images.
• Maintain knowledge on changes to the department’s practices regarding colors, style, logos, fonts, and branding.
• Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge and expertise in the areas of assignment, including principles, practices, and techniques for graphic design and desktop publishing.
• Stays aware of professional software innovations that may improve the department's public communications, as well as software used in editing and manipulating photographs, designing and creating electronic print specifications, and creating visual presentations.

Ability to exercise judgment and decisiveness in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental criteria.
• Ability to interact effectively, orally, electronically, graphically, and in writing with elected and appointed officials, City staff, law enforcement professionals, community representatives, and the public.
• Knowledge of a law enforcement agency's activities, the laws and regulations governing City and law enforcement operations, and the ability to quickly learn and apply City and department standards and preferences for communication with the public.
• Knowledge of principles and applications of modern and sophisticated digital cameras and editing equipment.
• Ability to plan, organize, and schedule work independently, have excellent time management skills, and maintain work effectiveness with frequent changes in workload and priority of assignments, and under pressure of deadlines.
• Knowledge and experience creating visual assets for law enforcement social media content.
• Ability to write newsletter content, scripts, news releases, talking points, social media captions, and department statements.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

• Equivalent to the completion of high school, supplemented by courses in computer design and/or some experience performing a variety of graphics and desktop publishing work; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge skills and abilities.
• May require a valid California driver’s license.
