Job Description:

Purpose:

Under general supervision, this position coordinates, assigns, directs, and performs tasks in the development and implementation of cultural arts programs and activities of assigned areas, including the day-to-day management and care of assigned collections, exhibits, records, material assets, and other City-owned, loaned, or borrowed property.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

• Leads employees, contractors, or volunteers to accomplish assigned educational programs, activities, and events in the assigned areas of cultural arts. Recruits, supervises, and trains staff and volunteers.
  
• Develops and monitors assigned budgets. Conducts and reviews needs assessments and establishes short- and long-range plans for assigned areas. Prepares and reviews reports.
  
• Plans, develops, coordinates, evaluates, and improves education programs, activities, and events for assigned areas.
  
• Oversees the use, care of, and resource allocations of assigned facilities, collections, grounds, and equipment and recommends facility improvements and asset acquisition and deaccessions. Coordinates assigned City-wide events and ensures timely development, resource allocation, and scheduling of activities and events.
  
• Assigns job duties, work schedules, and monitors task completion. Reviews work of others for completeness and quality.
  
• Coordinates the design and creation of necessary materials to market and promote programs.
  
• Maintains relationships with professional colleagues, organizations, and community groups to ensure quality of cultural education programs.
  
• Represents the City and department with the public regarding assigned areas of responsibility.
  
• Applies for, obtains, and monitors funds from grants, foundations, and donations.

• May be responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a related field plus one (1) year of experience related to the development and implementation of assigned programs.
  
• Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.
  

Licenses and Certifications Required:

• May require certification in CPR, First Aid, Water Safety Instruction, or other areas as specified for the assigned class.
  
• Appropriate certifications as specified for the assignment.
  
• Texas Class "C" Driver or Commercial Driver license if required for the assignment.
  

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education:

• Major Coursework in Environmental Education, Child Development, or Natural Sciences, or related field.
  

Preferred Experience:

• Experience designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating environmental education programming for preschoolers (ages 3-5), youth (ages 5-12), teens (ages 13-17), and diverse populations, including children with special needs.
  
• Experience recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, and leading program staff, including temporary staff.
  
• Experience with logistical planning and scheduling for large groups of participants.
  
• Experience coordinating administrative details with internal and external stakeholders.
  
• Experience teaching in a formal science classroom to state or national standards.
  
• Experience generating reports with Excel, RecTrac, and/or other similar software.
  
• Experience providing professional education training and/or continuing education to educators.
  
• Ability to fluently communicate (reading writing, speaking) in English and Spanish.
  

Other:

• Ability to travel to more than one work location.

The purpose of the Culture & Arts Education Coordinator position is to plan, develop and lead School Programs, including TEKS aligned school programs, homeschool programs, and designing comprehensive training programs for new staff.

External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
  
• Physical Requirements: Tasks may involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to lifting up to thirty-five (35) pounds. Work environment includes inside, and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, gases, and mists. Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond, and work with participant’s needs and safety issues.

Schedule varies in order to accommodate programming needs, see example below:

• School year: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  
• Summer: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. OR 9:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
  
• May be required to work during special events, evenings, weekends & holidays.
  
• Work schedule and location is subject to change based on department needs and programs.
  
• May be required to work during City emergencies such as extreme weather events.
  

Salary Range:

$54,340.00 - $64,660.00 per year.
