ABOUT THE POSITION

The FIRE Foundry Firefighter Paramedic Trainee responds to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, and other emergency situations with the goal of developing full proficiency in fire suppression and emergency medical services, including Advanced Life Support (ALS) care as a licensed paramedic. This is a trainee-level position designed to prepare candidates for advancement to Firefighter Paramedic through a structured development program.

Trainees perform all duties of a firefighter while gaining field experience as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), completing paramedic prerequisites, and progressing through a department-sponsored paramedic training program.

FIRE Foundry Firefighter Paramedic Trainees are expected to:

Trainees work under close supervision with increasing responsibility as training progresses. Fire Captains and training personnel provide operational oversight, while clinical supervision is guided by County EMS protocols and the department’s Medical Director. Incumbents may advance to the Firefighter Paramedic classification upon obtaining the State of California paramedic licensure, Marin County EMS accreditation, gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meets the qualifications of the higher level class.

The ideal candidate will haveprior fire service experience (e.g., volunteer, seasonal, or reserve) and wildland qualifications (e.g., FFT2, Engine Boss). In addition, the ideal candidate will havecompletedcollege-level coursework in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, or fire science.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
This is a limited-duration, non-permanent trainee classification. Incumbents are required to complete a department-approved paramedic program, including prerequisites, within an established timeframe. Incumbents are required to work 24-hour shifts, weekends, holidays, and during adverse conditions. EMT certifications and all required licenses/certifications must be maintained throughout employment. Candidates selected are subject to background check, physical examination, and drug testing.
Candidates selected are subject to fingerprinting by the Sheriff’s Department and must pass a California Department of Justice LiveScan, a background check, pre-employment Psychiatric Assessment, and medical prior to appointment.

Driver’s License: Ability to drive is an essential function of this assignment. Successful candidates must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license. Submission of a satisfactory driving history obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicle within the last 6 months will be required at the selection interview.
