Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Conduct, the Ethical Development Coordinator (EDC) is responsible for case management and investigations of student conduct violations for the campus. The EDC will assist in the efforts to promote student learning and development, by designing and coordinating restorative justice/conflict resolution workshops and developing programs to encourage responsible behaviors amongst students. Pursuant to California State University Executive Order 1098, or any superseding executive order, and the provision of Title 5, California Code Regulations Section 41301, the EDC is responsible for an independent caseload of alleged violations of the Student Conduct Code. The nature of the work performed by the EDC is highly sensitive and requires interpretation of CSU and university policies and procedures. This position works collaboratively with numerous offices and presents workshops and other educational programs to students.

Key Responsibilities:

• Case Management and Investigations of Student Code of Conduct Investigate allegations of violations of Student Conduct Code violations in accordance with Title 5 and current Executive Orders governing student conduct.
• Explain student conduct procedures to students, faculty, parents/guardians, and staff which may include CSU Executive Orders, Title 5 (Student Conduct Code), grievance procedures, and various federal, state, and local laws related to the University.
• In consultation with the Director of the Office of Community Standards, confer with CSUDH legal counsel to clarify law and policy expectations regarding student rights and responsibilities on a case-by-case basis. When necessary, may act as a spokesperson for the university or assist at formal hearing proceedings.
• Receive written and oral complaints from faculty, staff and students and the community concerning acts of student misconduct. Ensure due process by notifying students of the allegations made against them.
• Meets with students on an individual basis to engage in developmental conversations where appropriate and makes appropriate referrals to campus resources/partners based on the outcome of student meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling
• Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of federal and state compliance expectations, including FERPA, Clery, VAWA, and Title IX.
• Knowledge of the principles of restorative justice and an ability to apply that knowledge to a conduct setting
• Knowledge of educational philosophy in student conduct.
• Knowledge of academic misconduct and how to incorporate and apply it to the CSU process.
• Ability to assess and negotiate complex, highly sensitive situations.
• Ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and facilitate resolution of difficult challenges while maintaining strict confidentiality and sensitivity.
• Ability to research, understand, interpret and apply technical procedures or regulations as well as federal, state, CSU and university policies and procedures.
• Excellent critical thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 1-2 years of experience in student conduct
• Master’s degree in a related field
