Program Overview:

The Digital Navigation program at Loveland Public Library teaches people living in Larimer County and the surrounding area digital skills including computer, smartphone, tablet, and software basics, and how to use the internet. Members are placed in public libraries and other local organizations that serve older adults and veterans. In addition, AmeriCorps members will attend local events to promote the Digital Navigation program.

Loveland Public Library provides access to information to community members through lending physical and digital materials, educational programming, and access to informational services and resources. As a community hub, Loveland Public Library provides no-cost internet and computer access as well as the digital skills needed to use this technology.

Service Description:

Members in this program spend their service time supporting the growth and development of digital skills in the community to help bridge the Digital Divide. With technology becoming increasingly common in everyday life, more community members are being left behind, unable to complete basic digital tasks and skills.

Digital Navigators will meet community members 1 on 1 for appointments or drop-ins at assigned sites to teach digital literacy skills, facilitate digital skills practice, or teach online learning skills; members may complete appointments virtually upon arrangement with Program and Site Staff.

During service, Digital Navigators will assess community members on their digital skills by 1) observation of digital skills task completion, 2) assessments or skills inventories, 3) in conversation about learner’s digital skills goal. Members will accurately complete data collection paperwork for the program the day of an interaction with a learner OR log interactions daily either digitally or physically to complete paperwork at the end of the service week.

Members answer questions about the program by phone/email/outreach events to inform the community about the importance of digital skills and will perform other digital literacy related tasks or attend Outreach events as assigned by Program Staff or Site Supervisor - members may be assigned tasks that align with their skillset or scheduling availability. Throughout the service year, members will support their learners’ digital skill goals.

About the Living Allowance:

An AmeriCorps Living Allowance is not a wage, salary, or hourly pay. You are enrolling in a service position, not a job. The Living Allowance is a stipend designed to support basic necessities of the individual while in service, such as room and board, utilities, and transportation. Carefully consider this when applying.

About the Education Award:

At the successful completion of your service term, you will earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. This award can be used in many ways to further your learning or reduce financial burdens related to education. Common uses include paying tuition at eligible colleges, universities, and technical schools, or repaying qualified student loans.

There are also creative options you might not have considered: the award can be applied to approved study abroad programs, vocational training, or certification courses (such as EMT, wilderness first responder, or teaching credentials). Some members even transfer their award to a child or grandchild (if age 55+ at the time of service). You have up to seven years to use it, which gives flexibility to plan for what’s next. Remember, the Education Award is considered taxable income in the year it is used.
