The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office has an exciting opportunity to work with the Community Alliance to Revitalize Our Neighborhood (C.A.R.O.N.); a community based program of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. C.A.R.O.N.'s mission is to promote healthy communities by cultivating the relationship between law enforcement and the community by empowering families with education, knowledge, and resources.

As a Community Worker in the Sheriff's Office, you will be responsible for assisting departmental staff in the Engagement Unit by performing a variety of support tasks and services. This includes recording and maintaining simple records, reading and writing in English, communicating effectively to establish good relationships with community members, and maintaining positive working relationships with others. You should also demonstrate the ability to understand and follow written and oral directions.

The Sheriff's Office Community Engagement Unit is looking to fill one part-time extra help Community Worker I position in the CARON Program. Fluency in Spanish and possession of a valid driver license are highly desired.

Additional Responsibilities Include:

• Establish trusting relationships with families and individuals within the community to understand their needs and challenges.
• Connect families with available resources, services, and programs that meet their specific requirements.
• Conduct outreach efforts to raise awareness about available resources and facilitate access for underserved communities.
• Work with community leaders, members, and organizations including educators, non-profit organizations, religious groups, business owners, and service providers to expand resource offerings and strengthen community support networks.
• Provide guidance and support to families navigating various systems and services.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation of interactions and resource referrals.
• Assist in administrative duties and staff support as needed.
• Motivate residents to participate in CARON initiatives.
• Coordinate and conduct micro-targeted outreach in hard-to-reach communities that traditionally have not been engaged with the Sheriff's Office.
• Participate in field outreach and education efforts, such as door-to-door canvassing, program registration, flyer distribution, and other events.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way of gaining the knowledge and skills is:

Community Worker I: Equivalent to graduation from high school and experience which has provided first-hand knowledge of the problems, needs, attitudes, and behavior patterns specific to the client population served within the assigned program.

Knowledge of:

• Problems, needs, attitudes and behavior patterns of the client population and of the total community served.
• Social and community resources.
• Techniques for group and individual counseling.
• Basic case management processes.
• Identification and utilization of social and community resources.
• Basic case management processes.
• Perform clerical support work with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.
• Techniques for effectively representing the County in contacts with the general public, other agencies, community groups, and various business, professional, educational, and regulatory organizations.
• Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, clientele, and staff.
• Basic recordkeeping principles and practices.
• Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work.

Skill/Ability to:

• Address the client population's unique needs in a culturally sensitive manner.
• Relate and communicate effectively with the community served.
• Learn and understand the organization and operation of the assigned department and of outside department and agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
• Respond to and effectively prioritize multiple phone calls and requests for service.
• File materials alphabetically, chronologically, and numerically.
• Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
• Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Interpret and apply administrative and departmental policies and procedures.
• Organize, maintain, and update office database and records systems.
• Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
• Enter and retrieve data from a computer with sufficient speed and accuracy to perform assigned work.
• Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
• Interpret agency programs and policies to members of the community served.
• Write clear and comprehensive reports.
• Stand and walk for extended periods of time and lift and carry equipment and supplies used in the course of the work.
