AUXILIARY FIREFIGHTER (VOLUNTEER)

ABOUT THE POSITIONThe City of Downey Fire Department Auxiliary Firefighter Program began in 1987 with the goal of allowing fire academy graduates an opportunity to acquire on-the-job training and experience. Since its inception, the Auxiliary Firefighter Program has helped many people achieve their goal of a career in the fire service. Approximately 24 of the full-time firefighters actively serving with the Department participated in Downey’s Auxiliary Firefighter Program prior to being hired; and 22 were Auxiliary Firefighters with other departments.
The Auxiliary Firefighter Program is designed to provide fire academy graduates the experience and training needed to meet the requirements for their State Fire Marshal Firefighter I certification. Auxiliary Firefighters have the same duties and responsibilities of probationary firefighters and respond on emergency calls as part of the ALS Engine, BLS Ambulance or the BLS Truck Company. Currently there are 21 active Auxiliary Firefighters.
The City of Downey Fire Department is accepting applications for Auxiliary Firefighter to fill openings.
This is a volunteer position.The following examples are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by persons assigned to t he Auxiliary Firefighter position:
- Responds to emergency incidents, including medical calls, fires, traffic accidents, alarms, and rescues.
- Performs fire prevention inspections and maintains apparatus, equipment, and station facilities.
- Participates in ongoing training, drills, and public education activities.
- Interacts professionally with the public and completes other essential duties as assigned.
The minimum requirements for a position as an Auxiliary Firefighter are as follows:
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid California Drivers License with a good driving record
- Valid CPR Certification / Card
- Valid EMT Certification with a County in California (i.e. Los Angeles, Orange, etc)
- Graduation from a California State Fire Marshal Accredited Fire Academy
- Up to a two (2) year commitment to the program
- Commit to one 24-hour shift (on an assigned day)

Testing & Selection Process: All applications materials received by the application deadline will be reviewed and evaluated on the basis of information submitted to determine the level and scope of the candidate's preparation for the position. All information supplied by applicants is subject to verification. Candidates will be notified via email of their eligibility to participate.
Those applicants, who most closely match the desired qualifications, will be invited to participate in the selection process which will consist of an oral interview (Pass/Fail).
Selected candidate(s) will be required to successfully complete a medical evaluation and Live Scan fingerprinting.
