The City of Elk Grove is now accepting applications for the position of

MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST (STREETS AND TRAFFIC DEVICES)

The City of Elk Grove Public Works Department is seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Specialist assigned to the Traffic Devices Section within the Operations & Maintenance Division.

This position requires hands-on technical experience in the fabrication, installation, inspection, and maintenance of traffic control devices within the public right-of-way. The ideal candidate will demonstrate working knowledge of the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD), including proper sign selection, sizing, placement, retro reflectivity requirements, and pavement marking standards. Qualified candidates will have experience fabricating and installing regulatory, warning, and guide signs; applying and maintaining pavement markings and roadway legends; operating sign fabrication equipment such as plotters, vacuum applicators, shears, laminators, and post-installation equipment; measuring and laying out field markings in accordance with approved plans; and performing field inspections to identify deficiencies and implement corrective actions.

The ideal candidate understands public right-of-way and demonstrates the ability to professionally address resident inquiries while ensuring regulatory compliance. This incumbent will exercise independent judgment, plan and coordinate assigned work activities, maintain accurate documentation through computerized work order systems, and may provide technical and functional direction to lower-level staff. While primarily assigned to Traffic Devices, the position may also support streets and drainage operations as needed, requiring versatility and the ability to perform cross-functional public works maintenance safely and effectively.

Representative Duties

DEFINITION

Under direction, modifies, maintains, installs, and repairs public works infrastructure including streets, sidewalks, landscapes and irrigation, traffic devices, streetlighting, and storm water and drainage systems; performs a variety of manual labor and specialized maintenance work in support of the Public Works Department; operates and maintains hand and power tools and light to heavy duty vehicles and equipment; performs related duties as assigned. Duties may vary depending on the assigned department and division as described in the job functions section.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from assigned supervisory or management personnel. May exercise technical and functional direction over and provide training to lower-level staff and contractors.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced journey level classification in the Maintenance Technician series responsible for performing specialized maintenance work in an assigned area. Incumbents regularly work on tasks which are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment, and provide lead direction to a work unit of lower-level staff. Positions in the classification rely on experience and judgment to perform assigned duties. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to complete assignments. Work is typically reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. This class is distinguished from a supervisory class in that the latter has responsibilities for the supervision and evaluation of assigned staff.

Completion of twelfth (12 th ) grade supplemented by specialized training in a related field and two (2) years increasingly responsible experience performing inspection, maintenance, or repair duties in area of assignment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess mobility to work in the field; to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, grasp and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confining spaces and around machines; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment and assistance from other staff. The work requires wear and use of proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
