Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Performs routine grounds maintenance and landscaping functions, including mowing, edging, and trimming of grounds and park land areas; planting, watering, weeding; and maintaining trees, shrubs, and bedding plants.
- Applies a wide range of chemicals and fertilizers to treat and control insects, plant diseases, and nutrient deficiencies.
- Operates hand pump sprayers, injectors, tillers, broadcast and drop spreaders, aerifiers, sod cutters, etc.
- Remains informed of laws, policies, and regulations concerning the application of fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides.
- Maintains records, inventories, and maintenance schedules.
- May perform other park maintenance, construction, and repair activities; may use equipment such as riding mowers, push mowers, trimmers, back hoes, power tools, and hand tools.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
- Knowledge of the use and application of chemicals and compounds including fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and pesticides.
- Knowledge of insect pests, plant diseases, and nutrient deficiencies.
- Knowledge of techniques and practices for propagating, planting, and maintaining trees, shrubs, bedding plants, and ground covers.
- Skill in the use and safe operation of grounds maintenance equipment such as tractors, riding mowers, push mowers, trimmers, back hoes, power tools, and hand tools.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years of experience in a field related to landscaping, caring for plants, gardens, park lands, or other similar responsibilities.
Licenses and Certifications Required:- Must obtain a Texas Certified Chemical Applicators license within six (6) months of employment.
- Valid Texas Class C Driver License.
Preferred Qualifications: - Experience maintaining or working within historic landscapes, heritage trees, or culturally significant sites and mitigation of invasive species
- Experience identifying and maintaining native and adaptive Central Texas plants used in municipal landscaping
- Experience serving as a liaison between sites, service providers, and programs such as the City of Austin Community Gardens Program to coordinate landscape or maintenance services.
- Knowledge of Grow Green Program sustainable landscaping practices, including water quality protection, water conservation, recycling, selecting the right plant for the right place, and using the least-impact methods to address pest issues
- Ability to travel to more than one work location
Notes to Candidate:Salary: $23.13 - $26.26
Day and Hours: - Work hours may include after-hours, holidays, and weekend work.
- Work Shift - Monday - Friday 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM (May change according to departmental business needs)

Travel: - If the position requires travel, you must meet Driver Safety Program standards, Otherwise, you are responsible for transportation to and from multiple job sites as needed.
Essential/Critical Employee Designation: - Some positions are designated as Critical or Essential . Employees in these roles are required to report to work during emergencies or when operations are modified . This may include working from a designated site or an alternative work location.
Work Conditions: - Work hours may vary based on operational needs and may include evenings, weekends, holidays, or on-call assignments.
- Must have the ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
- A skills assessment may be required as part of the hiring process.
