ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Performs sign installation and maintenance.
• Paints loading, handicap and no parking zones; paints cross walks.
• Inspects and maintains lift stations.
• Installs or repairs cleanouts.
• Cuts and lays underground pipe; repairs pipe.
• Operates light motorized vehicles and equipment.
• Repairs water leaks and water main or sewer system breaks.
• Performs water pressure checks.
• Performs water and sewer taps.
• Inspects water meters.
• Installs, removes and replaces fire hydrants; performs flow tests.
• Repairs man holes.
• Repairs cave-ins.
• Performs utility locates.
• Performs water and sewer service connects to customer locations.
• Performs street repair and asphalt overlay activities; repairs pot holes and sidewalks.
• Participates in concrete projects.
• Performs traffic control.
• Performs recycling operations.
• Performs general building and grounds cleaning and maintenance.
• Participates in special event setup activities.
• Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
• Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge:
• City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
• Street maintenance and repair operations.
• Construction practices and methods.
• Concrete installation and repair methods and procedures.
• Painting operations.
• Traffic control methods and procedures.
• Water and sewer systems.
• Recycling operations.
• Business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.
Skill in:
• Handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
• Providing efficient customer service.
• Understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
• Operating various light motorized equipment and vehicles.
• Using various hand and power tools.
• Utility locates.
• Map reading.
• Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
• Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or equivalent; AND one year of experience in public works maintenance and repair operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
• Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License. May require possession of a Commercial Driver’s license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed both in an indoor or outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm and hazardous chemicals. May be required to climb ladders. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 80 pounds.
